Was the idea to ever have a stop somewhere under the epcor tower?
it was discussed at a high level but only really, really briefly. the alignment from churchill was fixed as was the alignment under 105 avenue and that pretty much set the geometry through/under station lands. that geometry as well as the previously fixed station lands and epcor tower components precluded the ability to widen the tunnel enough for a station. the track at that point is at least 65 feet below the main floor elevation for station lands so vertical circulation and exiting and firefighting and hvac etc. would all have been equally problematic physically, legally and financially…

Awesome info, thank you for sharing.

Would you mind shedding a bit of light on the whole process for how Station Lands/EPCOR tower RFP/Metro Line all came together back in the day? From the outside looking in it sure looked like some incredible coordination but all parties and overall some brilliant planning.

i’m not sure what i can add to your conclusion but i will briefly try to:

1. the project needs to have a singular vision from the beginning that all parties need to buy into.
2. the vision for large projects needs to be readily adaptable to changing circumstances.
3. you need a “full team” in place and available from the beginning.
4. all of the team members need to be empowered without abrogating control of the overall vision.
5. there will be “third party” constituents (ie approval authorities, tenants, neighbours, lrt designers and contractors) whose goals may not be identical but are equally valid even when contradictory. collaborative resolution of those conflicts means everyone needs to be willing to be “equal losers” if not equal winners.
6. everyone needs to be accountable but someone has to remain “in charge” and take ownership of the vision. that means staying involved and not watching from a distance.
7. everyone has the ability to derail things or to generate a poor result. if things are successful, everyone deserves credit and recognition, not the person “in charge” (except perhaps for having selected the right team in the first place).

hope that helps…

As a citizen's perspective, I recalled a very genuine co-operation between the city and Qualico- at which time, Ken was at the helm for Qualico -as the tracks were added after the planning and constructing had already commenced in early stages. A marriage in happiness truly.

given that at the first meeting between transit and ourselves to discuss the potential lrt extension to macewan we were presented with design drawings and plans that showed the lrt moving across the station lands site at grade (!) after we already had an approved development permit from the city(!), it wasn't "a happy marriage" at the beginning. it took a lot of work from both sides to develop a solution that worked for both sides (see point number 5 :) ).

Poking out now from Jasper Ave East in Viewpoint:

The 'Jason Smith and Steve Staios' Towers
Absolute meat and potatoes kinda towers...good in the room, they bring the intangibles, and allow the space for stars to shine, like Connor McStadium Yards

Must be getting rid of the bus stop shelter structure in front of buco, probably from extensive vandalism

That's the only thing that I could think of and sad to say a good thing. It was a nice structure and was a benefit to those in the area who use ETS, but instead became a liability and mess.
