Civic Pride is rising in Mississauga

What does pride have to do with it? Keep allowing suburban style buildings like Citicorp and MCC will never have an Encana style office tower.

Ah, but you forgot about the landmark-design incentive from the condo end: "Marilyn"...

(Then again, as a landmark design in its own right, Mississauga City Hall hasn't been much of a motivator for others)

"Second, with a crescent shape from many view angles the building might appear bulky in an unflattering and disproportionate way relative to the existing skyline."

I noticed this right away. But as mentioned earlier- Mies' TD centre loomed and bulked well over and beyond anything around it. I don't think this is always reason enough to reject or reform a design. Personally - blocking out the gawd awful Petro can centre is not a bad thing at all:)

Anyway- good for Calgary. It will be great to have a redefining landmark skyscraper in a Canadian city- it's been awhile!

An excellent design! Nothing truly groundbreaking for Norman Foster, but striking nontheless. Perhaps when this tower is completed in 2011, I may be persuaded to actually visit Calgary for the first time and check it out!

If built based on the current renderings, I think the Hummingbird proposal will be equally beautiful (if not better) than EnCana.

$500 to $600 a square foot to build ... hmmm ... I give it a50/50 chance of being built as there is no way Brookfield, Oxford, Bentall, GWL etc. will bid even close to that amount when this goes on the block in 2010

(not to mention the guy who dreamed up the project is no longer at Encana's helm and the new guy's a penny pincher)

"Although I take a certain point of twisted delight in noting how much taller this is than anything in Vancouver"

Vancouver deliberately caps the height of buildings so as to not diminish the views of its gorgeous mountains. It's called "urban planning"!

"What does pride have to do with it?"

Isn't it all about civic pride? Calgary, like Vancouver and Montreal, is bursting with the sort of hubris that builds amazing cities. Cowtown may not be much now but give it a little time as this new tower is only the begining. I like it a lot.

"I love how Calgary gets one exciting proposal and the Toronto bitchfest begins. With the ROM, AGO, Festival Centre and the Hummingbird projects I don’t think Toronto is struggling with great architecture."

Civic pride in Toronto is demanding even more. Is that such a bad thing? Is that considered 'bitching'?? The ROM Crystal and many other excellent projects do not excuse the banality of the new office tower designs. Lets face it, a lot of us are waiting and hoping for the announcement of that spectacular new signature tower that will stand out on our skyline. Why wouldn't we be? I'm happy for Calagary, but I'd love to see something really cool here now.

This will be built. Calgary currently has the lowest office vacancy rates on the PLANET. which is why you can expect this and about 3 other major projects in Calgary to go ahead in the new year, the downtown is going to get a whole lot more crowded over the next 4 years, and its going to be awsome!

Until the oil bust comes, as it will, and then much of that space will be empty, if it gets built at all.

Calgary might have a chance at one or two more signiture towers from the energy sector but look at the pool of fortune 500 companies in Canada that could actually pull off a tower of this magnitude. Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal might be able to pull off some mixed use super-talls but there designs are unlikely to be innovative (see BA centre). The kinds of new blood fortune 500's that might be added in this country are likely in the Technology or Health sciences sectors that, from a head office perspective prefer sprawling suburban campuses. Add the fact that Canadian companies tend to get gobbled up by international giants once they reach critical mass and you get the scenerio (sorry for the pessimism) where the Encana tower might represent the last corporate trophy tower to be built not only in Calgary but anywhere in this country.

Totally forgot about the FOSTER Lime Street Tower u/c in London.

So.... let's just change City Hall in my equation below to the London Foster.

With all due respect Tdot, I hate your attitude on this issue, that Canadians/Canada are destined for mediocrity and can only reach so high. I also do not think it is true.

Calgary will be lucky to get this project off the ground if the price of oil keeps going down, especially with its 1 Billion price tag. Don’t be surprised if there are some revisions before the shovels hit the ground.

Your comment that Calgary is the only city left with a corporate base able to pull off a signature tower is funny. There are many signature office towers in Toronto’s future, especially with its diversified and healthy economy, growing population and geographical position.

As quoted from Encana.......

"I think this project symbolizes the westerly shift of our economic power that's occurring in Canada today," said the organization's president, Bruce Graham.

Sure dude, whatever.

It is an interesting question. What major headquarters does the City of Toronto have left outside of protected sectors? There are two off the top of my head, Manulife and Sun Life, though the former is mostly just a skeleton office since most workers are in Kitchener-Waterloo.
