Re: What If?

I guess the site had a timer on it to change at 12pm since they believed the bid was going to go through.

Re: expo

Anyone want to start a Bloc Toronto party with me?

I'm in. Seriously - not a successionist party but a Toronto First Party. All three of the traditional parties have taken us for granted for too long.

Re: expo

The constitution be damned. What is needed is armed revolt. I have a feeling one is more liable to listen when their balls are in the line.

Re: expo

This is crushing. Working within the tourism industry, I can say that this event would have done wonders for Ontario. Our visitor numbers are horrific this year already. So many people seem to downplay tourism without realizing how big of an industry, and how important to our economy, it is. Goverments prop up auto manufacturers, but are hesitant to support an international event. Sad.

Last Expo I visited was 2000 in Hannover. Awesome. Although it didn't come close to it's visitor numbers, to be there and experience it for a week was priceless.

Re: expo

For people who don't get out much, this loss is no doubt a terrible blow - but Toronto's day-to-day cultural scene is rich, speaks of our creative excellence and international standing as a city, and is of more significance than outmoded one-off non-events that offer lowest common denominator thrills. Outside of the communist world, who cares about them any more?

It's not about the exhibits. It's about the dollars and infrastructure. Some things that Expos have given to different cities: Montreal yellow line and the Casino building (and some other ruins, and hell, the island itself); San Diego's Balboa park cultural complex, or Philadelphia's art museum. It goes on.

I do have some sympathy for those who feel Expos are outmoded, but we don't have to take the actual event that seriously. But they can do some serious good for the city.

Re: expo

Province.

Let's become a province.

Why?

No matter how much the feds hate you, fed/prov relations have a performance criteria that will guaranteed a few billion dollars more.

It's the way it (fed/prov) works.

So why consult Queens Park?

Re: expo

I'm not sure I understand why the hostility towards the feds over this; they came through didn't they? Clearly it was Dalton and crew who killed the bid.

I share the disappointment of most here. Not because I think the expo concept is great, but simply because it would have been nice to see all that money flowing into Toronto, and all the development to infrastructure etc.

Making a statement just 24 hours before the deadline after being mute on the subject for months when discussions where taking place is not coming through. It's a political move to make it look like they care about Toronto and promise money only when they can be assured the project was dead.

Re: expo

Agreed, I don't think the feds EVER had any interest in this thing.

Re: expo

wow, just wow.

unbelievable small minded and short sighted thinking by the Ontario Liberals.

If I remember correctly, McGuinty and Sorbara announced a slow down in the Ontario economy last week. They also announced that they would increase spending in infrastructure to offset any job losses. Wouldnt this be it?

I really dont understand the motivation behind McGuinty's decision. I honestly believe its just plain ignorance.

Re: expo

I think a lot of people over estimate how much of the money towards Expo would actually go towards infrastructure. Yes there would be some money needed towards roads, transit, sewers, water, etc. But the majority would have been spent on marketing, pavillions, security, wages for employees working at Expo, management, defecit coverage, and all the other services needed to make Expo happen.

Even as a job creation tool Expo hardly seems like the greatest tool too use. Not only will it run a defecit but the one year jobs created are not going to be high paying, and once it is over, there is little employment spinoff that will be created. However, build a subway line or upgrade a GO line to dedicated, reliable passenger service and not only do you have the same high paying construction jobs that Expo will create, but you also create new, and valueable, well serviced lands that are perfect for high density residential or commercial development which create economic spinoffs from more construction, more local businesses, new tax base, new companies, etc.

I actually think that the provincial government was wise to pass on this. Why invest in something that is going to lose money from the start when there are any number of other wiser investments available too them.

I heard the news on the radio on the way home.

I just want to say I'm sorry, Toronto, that you-all didn't get Expo --or the support you deserved from the *PTUI* politicians.

Re: expo

There's no doubt in my mind this was our last chance to get on the World stage. We can't bid for (and expect to win) an Olympic Games for at least the next 20 years, and why would we bid for an Expo again if we ****ed it up this time when it was surely guaranteed we'd win?

That's all folks, it's all down hill from here. We're stuck with second tier events like Dragon Boat championships and under 20 world cups.

Re: expo

But if there's any consolation, look at it this way: Paris, New York, Chicago all choked up at the chance of holding anniversary World's Fairs over the past quarter century. Reason: it wasn't worth it. Not any longer.

Toronto's got good company...
