Here is some more information. They should make sure and remove anyone named Skippy.

Liberals will remove 'fraudulent' memberships, as some register their pets to vote

Much quicker than anticipated. Per CTV:

In a press release, the party says a new leader will be picked on March 9. Leadership contestants must also declare by Jan. 23 and will be required to pay an entrance fee of $350,000, giving potential candidates limited time to fundraise.

The fee is a significant jump from the $75,000 fee in the previous leadership race.

Melanie Joile has said this morning she will not run. As for federal party membership. I think I can apply.

Anita Anand, Melanie Joly and Dominic LeBlanc are NOT running for Liberal leadership

Cannot belive Clark turned all this money down for Canada.
Imagine that, a politician looking after their own interests instead of Canada.
If only we had built more pipelines....
Let the navel gazing begin

Interesting, but not too surprising. It probably makes sense for those in key cabinet positions to stay for now and for those running to be able to better position themselves as outsiders.

It looks like the race will be a half dozen or so candidates with the main ones being Carney, Freeland and possibly Clark and Champagne. This covers the west, Ontario and Quebec fairly well, but I wonder if there also be an Atlantic Canada candidate now that LeBlanc has said he is not running.

I cannot understand the mental gymnastics it must take to convince yourself to to run for leader in this cycle. It's pretty clear whoever takes over is going to be Kim Campbell 2.0.

The only rationale I can think of is it’s actually not that hard to beat expectations here. Everyone expects you to get destroyed, come in and make even a minor dent and you look not bad. Then you hope pp and the conservatives screw up and you are pm in 5 years,

Former PM Jean Chretien turned 91 on Saturday - maybe the most successful Canadian politician of all time.

Interesting interview about his life.

He still goes to work. He wanted to be an architect, but his dad wanted one of his 9 kids to go into politics, and chose Jean for that. So he went to law school with intent to be a politician "because my dad said you will never get elected as an architect".

He never lost an election (in 40 years) and won 3 majorities in a row as prime minister - his first was that massive win over Kim Campbell in 1993. Under his tenure, it may have been the only time Edmonton elected 4 liberal MPs in one election - in 1993 Anne McLellan (who was later a deputy PM for a time) won by 12 votes, David Kilgour, Judy Bethel (former city councilor) who won by 203 votes and John Loney (by 83 votes). Edmonton had 3 of the top 5 closest election races in country that election.

Well first of all, you have to have a healthy ego and confidence to go into politics. Second, while history does repeat itself it doesn't always or repeat exactly.

The PC's under Campbell were decimated after two big parts of their party had already split off in two regions where they had much of their support.

The Liberals now certainly are not very popular, but they are not in that situation. It is more like 1984 with Turner, who although he lost big stuck around and actually rebuilt the party.

So Trudeau's university buddy and ultra-mediocre Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Jolie told Vassy Kapelos on national TV that the Liberals are willing to cut off Alberta’s oil exports to the U.S. in response to the Trump tariffs. Why not cut off Quebec Hydro exports? Why not cut off exports from Ontario? Entirely predictable from the Liberal party of Canada that has a long long history of being more than happy to sacrifice Alberta's, and western Canada's prosperity and success whenever they want to help central Canada. Very happy Premier Smith is standing up for Alberta - and not Rachel Notely or Nenshi that is for sure.
