July 22nd: Kensington Market obviously has a million stories (and a TV show) - any rags to riches stories would start there, not end there.... Here's an example from 1943, 67 years ago, at 77 and 79 Nassau Street in Kensington Market. Notice the kid looking out the window, just behind the tree at the far right - he'd be about 75 years old now... and I wonder what the image in the door on the right is. It doesn't look like the Canadian, Ontario, or British Coat of Arms...

July 23nd: Here is one photo of the Moorevale Park Shelter with bathrooms, 80 years ago, in 1930, just south of Mount Pleasant Cemetery It looks like it has been expanded a bit since then, with the porch filled in, but it still has a similar feeling, complete with the striped sections:

Finally, we just to 1983, and a photo from a member here, collations, who has a wonderful, vast, collection of Toronto photos on his Flickr feed (caution: once you follow that link, you likely won't surface for hours - you've been warned - I was lost at 1000-1002 Bathurst Street for a few minutes there...) . But for this thread he was down at 530-532 Front St West, 27 years ago on July 24th:

The Bathing station, at the foot of Cherry Street

I haven't been to Cherry Beach for about 20 years - that's probably when I shot this photo of the old 'bathing station' (1990?)
Wonder if the old shack is still there?

I can't find a more recent photo online, but the building, and the grounds, have been massively upgraded - apparently $1.5 million was spent: "The improvements include a new parking lot entrance, signs, landscaping and park furniture, improved trail access and lighting, and renovated washrooms." (from http://www.toronto.ca/waterfront/dev_projects.htm )

July 26th: A lot of photos today, starting exactly 100 years ago today, 1910, with a very moody photo of the Central Prison on King St. West near Strachan Avenue. It was opened in 1873, and developed a terrible reputation. Closed in 1915, 5 years after this photo was taken, all that remains standing from the original buildings is the Roman Catholic chapel (1877) at the south-east end of Liberty Park, and the Paint Shop ( from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toronto_Central_Prison )

From there we'll move to 1911, 99 years ago today, to the intersection of Shuter and Victoria, just south west of Yonge and Dundas, for bikes, automobiles, and bowling:

More track construction, this time on Ossington Ave looking south to Queen Street, with the Dome of the Mental Health hospital in the background - 1920, 90 years ago today:

and then looking north towards Dundas:

Finally we jump ahead to 1947, 63 years ago, and 27 years to the day after the two photos above were taken, to focus on 67 Ossington. The building on the left of the 1st photo is still there today.

I realize that when you look at random dates and locations there are bound to be these sort of coincidences, but still a surprise to have photo from almost the same location, on the same day, 27 years apart!

As always, you can find the details on all these photos on the Historic Toronto Photos from July 26th page.

July 28th: Two photos, of bridges, from 90 years ago today, in 1920. The first is a very clean looking Dunn Avenue bridge, with a train approaching. There are a few other historic photos from this area, here.

From an industrial bridge, we move to a far more idyllic scene, of two men looking out over the ravine on Roxborough.

f1231_it1526.jpg

I'm not sure just where along Roxborough this would be... The ravine where Mount Pleasant runs now, perhaps? I've geotagged it here.

You got it pretty close - that's the bridge over Yellow Creek. You've just got to figure out where the creek is buried.;) http://www.lostrivers.ca/PDRR.htm

The Roxboroughs did connect. Did you get this one from Jul 26th? - they must have been documenting rush hour traffic.

Thanks Anna for the details, additional photo, and the Lost Rivers link - always an amazing resource!

July 29th: Two VERY different photos today.... high art in 1936, 74 years ago tonight, with a photo of the Grand Opera, on Hanlans Point, with the city lights and buildings in the background:
s0071_it11474.jpg

From there we head to almost the opposite extreme, and a wooden toilet seat at 113 Strachan Street in 1939 (some technology hasn't changed much over the years):

Hey there, I'm back from 2 wonderful weeks in China! Hard to believe just a few days I was walking on the Great Wall (I posted a few pics on my photoblog, start at http://www.seemsartless.com/index.php?pic=2237 and work to the left...more, many more, to follow in the next few weeks).

But back to historic Toronto Photos!

August 19: A scene that hasn't changed much... people at the beach - Cherry Beach, in 1935, 75 years ago today:

Aug 21 We start back in 1913, 97 years ago, on a Thursday on University Ave, downtown for a look at the Parade Grounds south of Armouries, looking east towards Yonge Street:
s0372_ss0058_it0230.jpg

Then to 1922, 88 years ago, on a Monday in Riverdale along Pape Ave. at Bain Ave just before Pape was widened. Looking at Google Street view today, not much has changed, really!

71 years ago, in 1939, we have four kids in Stanely Park, sitting outside the front of 153-155 Strachan Avenue next to a new stately home:
s0372_ss0033_it0603.jpg

And then just a bit south to the backyards of 109-117 Strachan Avenue
s0372_ss0033_it0600.jpg

On another thread here there is a discussion about these old 'workers' homes, with historic and modern photos...

For links to the photos, a map location of each photo, and other photos in the area, see the Toronto Historic Photos from Aug 21 webpage.

Just two photos from August 22nd, the first from Leslie Grove, of kids playing with a maypole 96 years ago, on a Saturday in 1914.
s0372_ss0052_it0418.jpg

Then to 1949 we move to Dalhousie Street looking north from Gould Street - where the Rogers Communication Centre at Ryerson is now:
s0372_ss0058_it1970.jpg

August 19: A scene that hasn't changed much... people at the beach - Cherry Beach, in 1935, 75 years ago today:

Actually there is a major change. No Leslie Spit in that picture.

Ha, yeah, I'm not really sure what I meant with my comment... the lack of a huge land-mass seems like a big change for sure.

August 23: Two photos from 1931, 79 years ago, from Queen Street west, before University Ave was extended further south (one of them is mislabeled in the City of Toronto archives system as 1937).

South side Queen Street from Simcoe Street west to 233 - the bank is still there, but some of the smaller buildings along Queen are long gone.

s0372_ss0003_it1233.jpg

We then look further west, to a set of building that are all gone now, at the south side of Queen Street West from No. 191 to Simcoe Street.

(Details on these two photos, including their location, is available at http://wholemap.com/historic/toronto.php?month=August&day=23 )

Is this 2009 photo in the same location? I'm not certain.
