I'm assuming at the end of the pilot, they'll be examining the collision rates from before the pilot, in the middle, and at the end. Not just for King Street, but also the surrounding roads as well.

True, true.

Why do they insist on King?
A compromise could be street closures beginning mid-evenings and weekends, with the daytime open.
That covers all the block parties, while allowing streetcars to run through during work peak periods.

Besides, King Transit Corridor already makes it a bit more friendly now.
The curb lanes can still be used all day along too, and streetcars can crawl through at 5kph for about 4 or 5 blocks -- due to the increased risk of sudden pedestrians -- still faster than detouring.

No, they want it all, and they want it now, and you and I and others don't count, unless you're prone and subservient to the TIFF Masters. There is no compromise when worshipping the Gods!

Well, then they can temporarily operate it Bourke Street Transit Mall style (temporarily!), with pedestrians crossing all over, including in front of 5kph streetcars. Still faster than detouring the streetcars.

If they want it during the daytime, evenings AND weekends, then make TIFF behave like the Maeklong Outdoor Market during the daytime, I say -- ha! You know, where indian markets collapse their booths in 30 seconds flat, right before a train passes through, before putting the booth back up directly on the tracks! Okay, that's a bit extreme, I'm just half kidding.

TIFF can be fun, but King is getting too important to shutdown.
So temporary "Bourke Street Transit Mall" style operations might be warranted eventually.

But where would they put their worship lanterns?

Even if TIFF wants it all, who says yes in the end? The Corporation of Toronto. Go complain to them if you do not want King Street West shut down.

Attention @reaperexpress !
City reactivates transit signal priority for streetcars along King Street

OLIVER MOORE
PUBLISHED SEPTEMBER 2, 2018UPDATED 2 HOURS AGO
The King streetcar is moving markedly faster through Toronto’s downtown core after city staff decided to reactivate a technology that raises the chances the transit vehicles will get a green traffic light.

When a pilot project aimed at speeding up the King car began in November, the transponder and sensor system known as transit signal priority (TSP) was turned off as part of an effort to control for variables during the experiment and allow traffic patterns to adjust.

The technology was reactivated at Bathurst Street in April as a trial. But not until early July – eight months into the pilot – was it turned on throughout the area, leading to frustration at the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and concern that the experiment wasn’t being allowed to reach its full potential.

Numbers that have not yet been made public by the city show that July was the quickest month for the streetcar since the pilot began. Depending on vehicle direction and time of day, average journey time through the 2.6-kilometre pilot area was between 30 and 126 seconds faster than the previous month, with the biggest improvement being seen eastbound in the evening rush hours.

^ In retrospect, one has to wonder on this:

I could see doing that for a few weeks, maybe eight, but not eight months.

Something's fishy on this...

Yorkville makes a surprise comeback as TIFF party destination

Yorkville is back as TIFF opens for its 11-day run on Sept. 6. And it’s going to be buzzing.

The Concert Hall in the former Masonic Temple at Davenport Rd. and Yonge St. is hosting perhaps the hottest Gala after-party of the festival: the bash for Bradley Cooper’s directing debut A Star is Born, starring Cooper and Lady Gaga. It’s on Sept. 9.

Two huge parties take place the night before in Yorkville, on Sept. 8.

Always a star-larded event, the InStyle and Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s party shifts a few blocks northeast from its usual Windsor Arms Hotel location. It’s at the Four Seasons Yorkville, which opened in 2012 when the flagship hotel on Avenue Road closed.

Also on Sept. 8, the Windsor Arms has the 10th annual Artists for Peace and Justice Gala, co-hosted by Maxwell, Susan Sarandon, Jackson Browne and Ben Stiller.

“They’re starting to migrate back to Yorkville as a base. It’s a little bit more discreet and a bit higher elevated, that luxury feeling … that party atmosphere is definitely coming back to Yorkville,” said Heather Gillis, head of marketing for newly opened Yorkville luxury candle retailer, KANDL Artistique.

KANDL is hosting several festival events, including parties for the world premieres of Patricia Rozema’s Mouthpiece, which opens the Special Presentations slate, and Liu Jie’s Baby, starring singer-actress Yang Mi.

All well and good. So block Yorkville instead of King!

TIFF has been handing out cards to those redirected on the streetcar.
I think they are good for a regular movie at the Lightbox in the fall.
