Growing up at Yonge and Albertus in the 60s, one of the abiding fascinations of the neighbourhood kids were the ruins of the North Toronto Orthopedic Hospital. It wasn't a jail of course, but a hospital, and it occupied the area where the streets Georgian Court and Brynhurst Court are now.

Gosh, I never knew that!

Treats, yes.

Another 'pre-y2k heyday' type place would be Michels Baguette. Down to an outlet in the Path and Yorkdale I think.

Sad to report that it looks like the Eglinton Station Treats is no longer. (Shutters closed, even the lettering's gone)

Sad indeed. I said goodbye and best wishes for the future to the owner lady last Sunday as they were packing up. It's not a renovation, they closed. I didn't ask why.

At its inception in 1913 by the I.O.D.E., it was known as the Preventorium. Then it was used as an RCAF hospital in the 1940s (my gramps - who had a laundry at nearby 2616 Yonge - told me this) and was derelict throughout the 1960s. I still remember the faded RCAF roundel painted on the side of the building. At some point I remember the older folks calling it the 'North Toronto Orthopedic Hospital'

I'm now repeating gossip here but scuttlebut in the early 70s about the new for then houses built on the old site was that the land was leasehold. The lease being held by the I.O.D.E. As opposed to freehold.

Below is a 1924 map taken from Nathan Ng's great website of vintage Toronto maps. Look just below the top edge of the map; find Sheldrake Ave [it runs east from Yonge]. There's your old hospital on the north side.

What great work Nathan Ng has done in the service of Toronto's history. I've never met him. His work certainly has enabled accurate and illustrative discussion here at Urban Toronto down thru the years.

.
Agreed, his map compilation site is amazing. Another very useful site for Then and Nowers is this one with links to many City Directories: http://wherethestorytakesme.ca/toronto-city-directories/ : and the Park Lots site is interesting too: at http://wendysmithtoronto.com/parklotproject/

This was most useful. Thank you DSC. I found my great-grandfathers business in the 1910 Mights, page 130, at 12 1/2 Don Mills. It's identified as 'Chinese Laundry'. It's where 778 Broadview Ave is now.
I had never heard of City Directories till I ended up living in Guelph, early 70’s by then, and every year someone knocked on your door to update the directory. I was well acquainted with the Electoral Rolls tied to the telephone poles every election, in North Toronto, where you could see the occupations of one’s neighbours!

Yes, I remember the enumerators asked what your occupation was. Not much privacy in those days.

September 22 addition.

Very well done writeup here.: http://silenttoronto.com/?p=9#comments

Now a book store. Unlike some of the other theatres in Toronto that closed down to become "event locations" or the like (such as the Capital and the Eglinton) this is a location you can freely visit. It's a beautiful place, so you should, freely visit. Don't forget to buy some printed media (Ie., a magazine or book), because everything on the interwebz is a rehash, right? :)

The kind manager there today let me pull out my "point and shoot" camera to take some hasty pictures for you.

I have matched up today's pictures with "Then" pictures taken by me at the Rainbow Cinema on Front street. These Then pictures are mounted on the walls there, framed and under glass, so the quality is a bit dodgy. My heartfelt thanks to the owners of Rainbow Cinemas for their sense of local movie house history.

Note the "dome".

I couldn't get a sharp Now picture with the "same amount of dome" - you will have to settle for the domes lower edge. I took several snaps, only this one turned out alright. Trust me - the dome - it's there.

Here you go, I'll make it up to you.

Replying to my own post of 7 years ago.

Today I went back to the Runnymede Theatre, formerly Chapters and now Shoppers Drug Mart.

Still beautiful inside.
