Yes ... lots of farmers in Toronto ...

Perhaps a better question is, what is the union membership of workers who live in Toronto?

The better question would inlcude splitting the union membership by public sector and not. What percentage of Toronto voters is each group?

I like Conrad Black's article, although I can't say I agree with his endorsement of Sarah Thomson. We know nothing of her, *really*, neither does Black, so endorsing her just because she's a bit different from the "same old, same old" doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Anything to keep her name in the press. I'm still hoping for some semblence of a darkhorse-come from behind momentum of support building up for her campaign by August. Between the other socialists, radicals and feckless moderates running for office; Sarah's this city's only hope.

Given our extremely staid political climate in this country, it makes a whole lot of sense to me. Anyone with even the slightest touch of a fresh perspective can't possibly be worse than the "same old, same old" bunch of backward-looking cronies that permeate the political sphere in this country.

^ If the people ever showed the slightest inclination towards supporting so called 'fresh perspective' politicians you can be sure that pretty much it is the same group supporting our existing candidates would be supporting them, or crafting their chosen candidates into people with perspective.

Whether you view it as fortunate or not, our politics are so staid by the collective voters unwillingness to make tough decisions that anything other than the mushy middle revenue neutral candidate isn't going anywhere (and I would count the spectrum from Pantalone to Ford as within that 'middle')

I guess there is no Youtube access on the prison computers, because Mr Black would recognize an airhead after watching this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuEy4wilwe8

Why is she an airhead? If anything, that video demonstrated that she has a grasp of this city's issues and has offered solutions.

Yes, she doesn't seem to have the gift of public speech but that's something she'll gain with experience and exposure. Thanks for the link, I'm more inclined to vote for this underdog now.

I think she honestly believed it. She's an incredibly earnest campaigner, and has been since the beginning where she wrote blog posts indicating that she "just looked up what she needed to do to run for mayor!" There are lots of things from my past that I'm sure I misremember. It's not a huge deal.

I like Sarah Thomson, but I think with the current weak mayor system council would just eat her alive. She doesn't seem to have the political savvy or knowledge of how the City works to make it.

If she honestly believed it, then that makes me wonder even more. It was a much bigger vote spread than 200 votes. If she can't understand straightforward election results, how's she going to deal with other addition and subtraction problems? I'm not going to write her off yet, but it does make me wonder.

I think that except for a veto, which is a really blunt instrument, Toronto's Mayor has all the tools of a strong mayor system.

I think you might be right, she doesn't lie outright, she just has a reality problem. Coming last place in a council race (1000 votes behind second place) is honestly in her mind the same as losing an election by a hair.

She also truly believes what she said in the video about transit. "Buses add to the gridlock in our city, they don't take away from it!" Hopefully I don't have to explain to you the flaw in this logic.

Indeed she comes across as very harmless and innocent, so much so that she has to talk to the camera as if she's talking to a kindergarten class, complete with hand gestures to articulate the concept of big, and fake shivering to accompany other reality-challenged statements like "we have snow and ice for 6 months of the year!"
