Yes, that is the mantra I grew up with -- suck it up and go to school / work / sports practice / wherever no matter what. We now realize that it's far better to stay home and not spread germs.

Italy shuts all schools over coronavirus outbreak

Italy is closing all schools and universities across the country in an effort to prevent a further spread of the novel coronavirus, the country's government said Wednesday.

All schools will be closed from Thursday, and will remain shut until Sunday, March 15, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Education Minister Lucia Azzolina announced.

Azzolina said on her Twitter that the "prudent" decision was not a simple one and that the government waited for expert opinion.
The Civil Protection Agency said Wednesday that the country had 3,089 cases of coronavirus, including 107 dead and 276 recovered.

Some schools issued letters earlier on Wednesday informing parents and guardians they will be closed as a preventative measure as of Thursday, with remote online teaching beginning Friday. Schools already had the option to suspend teaching over the outbreak, but this has now become mandatory.

The Italian education ministry has launched a website with information about how to deal with a possible coronavirus outbreak in schools. It also launched an information portal focused on remote learning and said 2,000 teachers participated in webinars on distance learning on Tuesday, the first day of the program.

Italy is experiencing the worst outbreak of the disease in Europe, with 79 deaths reported.

The government has put several cities and towns in the country's north on lockdown. The measures include banning people from entering or leaving affected areas, suspending public events and closing attractions, such as museums, to the public, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control. An estimated 100,000 people are effectively under quarantine.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte was forced to admit last week that a hospital in the northern town of Codogno had mishandled the region's first coronavirus case and had contributed to the deadly virus' spread.

Two major Canadian travel insurance providers — Manulife and TuGo — will no longer cover new customers who need to cancel their trips due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Travellers with regular trip cancellation insurance typically have been able to get reimbursed if, after booking their trip, Ottawa issued a coronavirus-related advisory to avoid non-essential travel to their destination.

However, customers with Manulife or TuGo will no longer get this type of coverage. Both companies have issued alerts, saying the coronavirus is now a "known" issue and therefore cancellation coverage no longer applies — as it's designed for unexpected mishaps.

Trump calls WHO's global death rate from coronavirus 'a false number'

‘This is just my hunch’, president says on Fox News and then plucked his own surmising of a death rate out of the air

Donald Trump declared live on television on Wednesday night that he did not believe the World Health Organization’s assessment of the global death rate from coronavirus of 3.4%.

“I think the 3.4% is really a false number,” he told Sean Hannity, one of his favorite conservative Fox News hosts, in a phone interview broadcast live.

“Now, this is just my hunch,” Trump began, before continuing that “based on a lot of conversations with a lot of people that do this, because a lot of people will have this, and it’s very mild – they’ll get better very rapidly, they don’t even see a doctor, they don’t even call a doctor.”

He went on: “You never hear about those people, so you can’t put them down in the category of the overall population, in terms of this corona flu, and/or virus. So you just can’t do that.”

He then plucked his own surmising of a likely death rate out of the air.

“You know, all of a sudden it seems like 3 or 4%, which is a very high number, as opposed to a fraction of 1%,” he said, perhaps referring to the typical death rate for influenza, which is well below 1%.

Person who travelled to Vegas tests positive for coronavirus; Toronto Public Health monitoring

News 10:00 AM by May Warren

A person who travelled to Las Vegas for an international conference has tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the total number of infections in Ontario to 24.

According to an internal email sent to staff in the University Health Network, the person went to the Emergency Department at Toronto Western Hospital Wednesday with respiratory symptoms.

“All protocols were followed and the patient was assessed and sent home to self-isolate,” said the email, from Gillian Howard, the vice-president of public affairs and communications at the University Health Network.

“The patient is now at home and being monitored by Toronto Public Health,” she continued.

“Immune survivors” of Covid-19: Protective antibody for treatment and prophylaxis?

From link.

Is it likely that persons who survive the novel coronavirus (initially called “2019-nCoV”, “NCP” and now as of Feb. 11 “COVID-2019”) are immune to reinfection?

Yes (but exceptions might exist).

Are clinical trials to define such immunity and its duration needed ASAP?

Yes.

In the absence of licensed antiviral drugs or vaccines for COVID-19, how might plasma and B-cell donation from such survivors help?

Immune plasma with polyclonal antibodies against the virus could be studied in a clinical trial to determine if it helps treat infected patients at risk for, or who already have, serious disease.

Could B-cells from COVID-19 survivors that make specific types of antibody against the virus be used to develop monoclonal antibodies against the virus?

Yes. (This approach has been successful for other diseases such as Ebola (“mAb114”)).

Could either immune plasma polyclonal antibody, or a monoclonal antibody developed from specific B-cells, be studied in clinical trials not only for treatment of patients, but also for prophylaxis (prevention) of disease?

Yes, for both pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and also for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

Could antibody levels serve as a “correlate of protection” for vaccines against COVID-19?

Yes, possibly. T-cell immunity (CD8+ CTLs) could also play a role in addition to B-cell antibody immunity. Antibody correlates of protection exist for some vaccines such as Hepatitis B.

If a person was truly an “immune survivor of COVID-19” could they safely help provide care to patients with acute ongoing disease?

Yes, although clinical protocols should be followed to determine safety from reinfection, especially if effective antibody (neutralizing, ADCC, other) levels are not maintained over time.
