Yet the City of Toronto won't shut them down and may not even lay charges for violating emergency orders.
Does this moron not realise he is galvanizing support AGAINST his cause. The more the city and province tiptoe around this situation, the more there are going to be calls to do something about it. That in turn will lead to stricter lockdown measures perhaps like infact closing Wal-Mart and Costco entirely in favor of actual grocery stores and pharmacies.
As I said before you can get cleaning supplies, food and other essential items at Metro, Loblaws, No Frills even Shoppers. You don't have to go into Walmart and Costco.
So ridiculous. He obviously holds this event as a publicity stunt and then gets upset at reporters. Bureaucrats say they have to "investigate". Sure, because it's not 100% obvious what is going on. Ford rants about the yahoos and hooligans and being strict but nothing is done. Tory furrows his brow and says he can't enforce fines. What a gong show.

They know that if they go in to shut them by force with the media there it would be an even larger gong show. You would end up bringing out every anti-mask, covid denying activist in Toronto trying to portray them as a victim.
Personally I would have gone in and arrested the owner of the store for breaking the law and shut it down.
This just shows how little they actually care about people. I get that it is a balancing act in terms of health vs the economy but at the same time just because one restaurant is not a problem does not mean every other one is not.
Restaurant staff were chanting and wearing pig ears. I don’t think it could have gotten any worse.

Yes but do you really want staff dragged out of the store by police enforcing a by-law in response to a lockdown mandated by the Province live on TV? From a PR perspective it would be a disaster. May as well brick up the ventilation and smoke them out!
Staff don’t need to be dragged out. The owner’s intentions were well publicized. It could have been shut down before it even got started. Police waited until it was well underway before attending.

But again.. dragged out enforcing a City of Toronto by-law in response to a Government of Ontario mandated lockdown is a PR disaster. The City and Province would look like heartless bastards who chose to use force rather than compassion.
It's a delicate balance but you can't use force with everyone watching no matter how justified you may think it is.

Sometimes you have to be heartless bastards - that's how you communicate that the time for BS is over. The more you play softball, the more you send the message out that whatever rules there are, it's optional - which is precisely the opposite to the intent of your original message.
