I recall the opposition to bag fees being the fee, not a freedom of choice stance.
If they are banned all together there is no fee, and no problem.

They'll just start offering paper bags. Retailers will need to offer a disposable bag option.

Bulk Barn already does this and I know more than a few people who keep reusable bags in their car.

Places like No Frills sell reusable shopping bags that are quite large and quite durable.

Fabric and other reusable bags are easy to come by. I have been using them for more years than I can remember.

I think it's great legislation; of course some advocates don't think it goes far enough but, as the government release mentions, these are products where alternatives currently exist and which are notorious for ending up in the uncontrolled environment (i.e.; tossed trash). One problem with recycling is municipalities have to find a market. Those that use automated sorting can't accept black plastic because the sorters can't detect it. This, to me, is another area where the government could step in, or at least threaten to to spur the industry to change. Same with bubble packs. I know the plastic is probably a coded acceptable product for recycling but many are not stamped so I do not for risk of contaminating the stream. I'm not a chemist so "looks like" may be wrong.

We were avid users of reusable grocery bags up until The Plague. At first, our store wouldn't allow them. They later relented so long as you pack yourself. The missus does, I do not - I have in the past and it ain't pretty.

Agreed.

One thing.

Sobeys ditched plastic and offers paper bags.

In their infinite wisdom, the paper bags have no handles!

(mind blown on how this passed through the management committee process)

I know its more expensive to put handles in..............

But somehow Whole Foods has managed it for 25 years.

The problem is with heavy grocery items unlike what you will find at Whole Foods the handles break under the weight.

I am thinking it is more of a legal liability thing. By not having handles it forces people to carry the bag in their arms.

You can make the handles strong enough; they just cost more.

Of course, people should and often will use reusable bags. But there needs to be a solution for when you don't have them with you (and the answer shouldn't be to buy yet more reusable bags, which have their own environmental footprint).

Mine is also from Eatons but was made by Evin (a Montreal manufacturer). . It looks a bit (!!) ragged but it is VERY warm and I wear it often. I bought it in 1972.

TY, for making me feel young, for the 1st time in ages! LOL

That, was before I was born!

Justin Trudeau wins National Geographic Planetary Leadership Award

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has been honoured with National Geographic’s Planetary Leadership Award.

The nature and science-focused media company gave Trudeau the nod at their virtual award ceremony Thursday evening.

“In recognition of his leadership in the protection of Canada’s marine and terrestrial life, we are pleased to present Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada with the Planetary Leadership Award,” National Geographic tweeted.

The annual award is given to world leaders who establish globally significant protected areas. According to National Geographic, less than 1% of Canada’s marine areas were protected when Trudeau was elected in 2015, and since then it has increased to 14%.

The magazine also praised Trudeau for investing $1.3 billion in Canada’s “nature budget,” the largest single conservation investment in Canadian history.

Also significant for the award committee was Canada’s partnership with the Qikiqtani Inuit Association and the Government of Nunavut to establish the Tallurutiup Imanga National Marine Conservation Area and Tuvaijuittuq Marine Protected Area.

John Geiger with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society congratulated Trudeau on the award.

I can't see Doug Ford nor Jason Kenny being even nominated for this.
