Cool! Where on the ring road is the tunnel located? From the photos it seems to be a comparable length as the airport trail tunnel but without any of ventilation and emergency refuges found in that one. I wonder why?

It is on Weasalhead road where it goes under the ring road on the northside of the elbow river. You can access it (or rather can't since it is on Tsuu T'ina land) by taking Weaselhead road starting at Grey Eagle Casino and following it west.

Awesome to see this section of the road finishing up, I did a bunch of environmental work on the ring road from 2017-2019 before changing jobs. I need to get out and take a drive through the project to see the progress.

I can think of a few things:
  • Even though it is a tunnel i think it isn’t below grade (so danger of heavier than air gases accumulating, less requirement for storm water pumps).
  • The tunnel has less dead volume in it - volume that isn’t part of the ROW - so more of the tunnel is subject to the piston effect
  • There is far less need of absolute certainty of avoiding a fire disabling the road above.
  • Narrower tunnels, lower speed tunnels perhaps require less requirements by code
  • The tunnel is probably shorter!

I still cannot believe that it will be a year next month since the SW ring road project posted any pictures on their website. The West project is doing a fantastic job of keeping people up to date, and I love how detailed and much more frequent thier reports are!

The media team at KGL must have felt your angst...new photo update! http://www.swcrrproject.com/media-centre/photo-gallery/

Although still pretty pathetic and no where near the detail of the West Ring Road project updates, you are right!

Kinda want to do a road trip in the SW now lol. Now only a few more years before one can circumnavigate the whole city!
My (very unrealistic) dream is, prior to the ribbon cutting for the final segment, but when it is essentially complete, they shut down the ENTIRE ring road to general traffic on a Friday evening in the summer. They then allow people to buy slots to set out recording a "fastest lap". Cops are on board, manning each interchange to ensure no other traffic gets on the road. This allows people to get it out of their system, and settles the question that I am sure many car/motorcycle enthusiasts will wonder about.
