The Star:

Ford faces criminal charges
SARAH BOESVELD
STAFF REPORTER
Toronto City Councillor Rob Ford was arrested this morning on charges of assault and threatening death.
Officers from 22 Division arrested the councillor at 9:30 a.m.

"He was taken to 22 Division, processed and released" this morning, said Const. Wendy Drummond.

Police would not disclose any further information, saying they had to be careful not to reveal the identity of the complainant.

Ford is scheduled to appear in court Friday, April 28, at 2 p.m. at a courthouse on Finch Ave. The outspoken and controversial Etobicoke councillor was in the news recently after remarks made about hardworking Asian people, saying "the Oriental people, they're slowly taking over . . . they're hard, hard workers."

Members of Toronto's Asian community staged a sit-in protest outside his City Hall office a few days after he refused to apologize for the inflamatory comments.

How this loser continues to get elected is beyond me.

lol, I remember once on TV someone called him a fat lard....

Right.. like this is going to change anything? Remember the ACC drunkeness debacle? He still got re-elected. Seriously, I'm having some doubts about the intellectual capability of the people in his ward.

Gtfooh!

Rob Ford charged with assault, threatening death
Posted: March 26, 2008, 5:25 PM by Rob Roberts

Etobicoke councillor Rob Ford has been charged with assault and threatening death after an incident at his home this morning, police said this afternoon.

Mr. Ford, who was arrested but released by police this morning, is scheduled to appear in court next month to face the charges.

A police spokeswoman would give few details about the arrest, citing the force’s “obligation to protect the victim.”

Constable Wendy Drummond confirmed the basic facts about Mr. Ford’s arrest and charges, saying that police were called to the scene at about 8:30 this morning. “He was arrested at the scene,” she said.

However a police source familiar with the case confirmed that the charges against Mr. Ford arose from a domestic dispute at his home.

Mr. Ford was recently in the news for suggesting industrious "Orientals" are "slowly taking over" during a council debate about extending holiday shopping to all downtown stores.

While urging council to go further and support city-wide openings 365 days a year, he said Torontonians should try working as hard as "Orientals."

"Go to the Orient. Go to Hong Kong. I've been there. You want to see workaholics? Those Oriental people work like dogs. They work their hearts out.… They sleep beside their machines. That's why they're successful in life," Mr. Ford said.

"Oriental people, they're slowly taking over. There's no excuses for [them.] They're hard, hard workers."

Mayor David Miller, who was not in the chambers when Mr. Ford made his remarks, demanded he apologize, but Mr. Ford refused, and said he would consider running against the mayor in the next municipal election.

Mr. Ford has developed a reputation for his off-the-cuff -- and often off-colour -- remarks.

In 2002, he called Giorgio Mammoliti, a councillor of Italian descent, a "Gino Boy," on the council floor. In 2006, he lied about getting drunk and hurling insults in the stands at a Toronto Maple Leafs game.

But the son of a former MPP also has plenty of devoted fans who appreciate his candid manner and careful attention to City Hall spending.

But the son of a former MPP also has plenty of devoted fans who appreciate his candid manner and careful attention to City Hall spending.

His ideas on reducing spending are usually smoke and mirrors like using less something that is already paid for, or cutting benefits that are found in the majority of workplaces that would result in higher turnover rates.

Does he have the good sense to resign, or will this bounce off him like every other inappropriate thing he's done/said?

WHY DO THE VOTERS KEEP ELECTING SOMEONE LIKE THIS?

I am sure he is a huge believer in the law and order agenda, vis-a-vis the "right" of someone holding and running for office while being charged with serious crimes like assault and threatening death.

CITY HALL: Councillor Rob Ford facing charges
Intends to plead not guilty: lawyer
March 26, 2008 06:59 PM
DAVID NICKLE

Ward 2 (Etobicoke North) Councillor Rob Ford was arrested and charged Wednesday morning with assault and uttering a death threat, police say.

But Ford’s lawyer Dennis Morris told Toronto Community News that Ford will be pleading not guilty on both counts, and revealed that the allegations were made by Ford’s wife, and the incidents were alleged to have occurred in Ford’s family home Wednesday morning.

“Our position is that we’re pleading not guilty to both charges - the offences are spurious and the offences never did occur,†said Morris in a telephone interview.

According to Toronto Police, the councillor was arrested and processed in 22 Division at about 9:30 a.m. this morning. But police would release no other details about the allegations against Ford - including where the alleged assault and threat took place - because doing so might reveal the identity of the victim.

But police say he was released on his own recognizance, on a promise to appear at a future court date.

Morris said that a condition of Ford’s release was that he not to return to the family home and have no contact with his spouse. But he said Ford and his wife’s two children remain in Rob Ford’s custody.

The news went through city hall late Wednesday. Ward 30 (Toronto Danforth) Councillor Paula Fletcher, who has frequently engaged in sharp debates with the often voluble Ford, said she was shocked.

“Well it’s very disturbing news when a member of city council would be arrested and charged with an extremely serious crime - especially one that involves physical violence and uttering death threats," she said. "It’s a very disturbing thing. It’s early days for determining the circumstances, but I’m quite shocked and disturbed.â€

According to city spokesperson Brad Ross, the fact that Ford has been charged has no bearing on his ability to continue to carry out his duties as a city councillor.

“In our justice system everybody is innocent until proven guilty,†said Ross. “I think that’s an important message in all of this. With respect to a councillor remaining a councillor when facing criminal charges, there is nothing to prevent a councillor from continuing to do their duties when they’ve been charged. The only thing that prevents a city councillor from sitting is when they’ve been incarcerated. That means they can’t do their job. nd clearly we’re not even close to being there yet.â€

The man is a clown and a buffoon, but in all fairness he is very diligent about representing his ward. I would not assume that this will harm his chances of reelection.
