The Wikipedia entry for Rob Ford is awesome.

Particularly satisfying is the juxtaposition of points: "Ford reports he has not "smoked pot in 25 years" and that he denies having told a woman at a public event to go to Iran to be "raped and shot"."

Immediately followed by: "In 1999, Ford was arrested in Miami for driving under the influence (DUI) and marijuana possession charges.[62] "

It actually does as good a job as could be hoped, at explaining to the world how a person like Ford got elected in the first place.
Critical thinking is something many voters do not have unfortunately. Rob Ford does not even have a Bachelor's degree.

To be honest most bachelor degrees mean next to nothing nowadays. I'd rather have someone without a degree but who offers constructive solutions than someone with a philosophy/accounting degree who is a religious fundamentalist (and there's plenty).

There's something to be said about the learning experience provided by attending university outside of the classrooms, but people like Rob Ford would probably get none of that anyway - driving to uni and spending most of their time with their high school friends in malls and strip malls regardless.

Neither, as far as I know, does George Smitherman, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Peter Mansbridge, Sook Yin Lee, or others who have achieved much. On the other hand, plenty of knuckleheads like myself, fumbling around in lowly unskilled slacker jobs their whole careers, have Bachelor's degrees. Rob Ford is a fool and a blowhard, but he isn't a fool and a blowhard because he never completed a degree. Time people gave up the idea of university completion, at whatever, as the one thing that should differentiate between those who deserve the rewards of the good life and those who should serve them.

+1, pretty good summation.

higher education is desirable, as is real world experience.
sometimes university is not feasible or even warranted for most careers. yes, careers not just 'jobs'.

that said, didn't RF go to Carleton or UoOttawa? did he not complete his degree?
he's had the opportunity and financial means to improve himself, but his personality and fundamentalism/ideology seems to entrenched him as rich white trash stuck in the 1970s suburbia.

Perhaps not, and perhaps many who don't have one could get one if they had the time, money, or inclination to do so.

But Rob Ford had all 3, and dropped out of first year University at two different institutions. This suggests a lack of ability, rather than anything else.

The sheer incompetence and general stupidity he has demonstrated during his political career would support that.

Would you tag everyone who had the time, money and inclination but didn't complete a degree as lacking the ability to do so or is this a special assessment for a man you hate? Mr. Gates et al await your answer.

You honestly think the two are remotely comparable?

I wasn't aware that Bill Gates had flunked out of first year university twice.

I don't see that it is all comparable. By all reports, accounts, and evidence, Bill Gates is of average and more than likely above average intelligence, and could complete a university program. He certainly didn't flunk out. Heck, his SAT scores were near perfect weren't they?

I'm really surprised at how ignorant you are of the two individuals in question to even start comparing them. Surely one is a case of being so intelligent, that he didn't need University, the other one is so stupid, that he didn't understand university.

I don't know if many undergraduate programs in Ontario flunk people out. Political Science at Carleton will probably keep accepting your fees as long as you're willing to pay them. I guess Rob Ford was able to complete the five year high school stream at a level that qualified him for acceptance into university. That's no special indication of greater intelligence, but it's more than most students achieved at the time. But keep thinking of him as the dumbest of trailer park trash if that suits your prejudices. We may not understand how or why, but he has become mayor of the largest city in Canada, booming like few other cities in the world (no thanks to him), without a university degree. That's a lot more than most of us will achieve. Bill Gates isn't comparable to Rob Ford. He's just the first to come to mind as someone who didn't finish university but scored big in the world. There are many others. I don't know, Richard Branson, Woody Allen, and I'm sure all kinds of people who create businesses and employ people and lead organizations in the GTA. The worst thing about Ford's university career, as mentioned above, is his evasion and misrepresentation of it. He even misrepresents his involvement back then on the football field.

This, and the other things he lies about. I don't know why people still think he's the most honest of the bunch.

Well I hear Ron Ford on his radio show today and he is now after cleaning staff for the city stating they make 62,000. He says they make 32./hr and I am assuming 35 hr week which would mean 58,240 but that 62,00 he says is with benefits if I remember correctly. Then he goes on to say he has all the respect for those workers. And later they are talking about bring a casino to Toronto and they keep bringing up it will bring union jobs. I mean he should make up his mind - are you for union jobs or not. I was actually surprised I heard people say they are against casino. Not surprised there are people against casinos but surprised they got through on the show.

^ Isn't the casino huckster job Mammolitti's? Ford hasn't exactly been saying that "people want casinos, casinos, casinos!"
