There's no hard cutoff right now for vote vs appointment (other than the few months before general election as mandated by the CoTA). The old policy is dead letter. Council will decide each vacancy on a case by case basis.

If council appoints someone that doesn't meet the approval of the family, they will throw a huge fit.

You know, it truly is gross watching this final act unfold; the breathless "news" coverage has nothing to do with the relative merit and/or importance of the office of a Toronto City Councillor (such as it is), and everything to do with Rofo's status as a tacky tabloid "celebrity." We wouldn't be getting all this if he hadn't been such a train wreck on the world's stage for a few years there. And, as ever, good ol' Thug is exploiting the situation for all it's worth. He's garbage wrapped in human skin.

Wouldn't it be amusing if the City took the Fords to court to get them to pay for another election if they try and force the issue? After all, they insisted on shoving an obviously unwell candidate into the position - never even mind how unfit he was for office otherwise - when they knew he was deathly ill. Shouldn't they bear some responsibility for the necessity of yet another election so soon after the last one?

I know, I know: It would never happen, even if such a thing were legally possible. Every 'respectable' politician in Toronto let the Fords steal their milk money for years. They're certainly not going to change that now. But it's funny to imagine the expressions on Doug and Diane's faces if such an occurrence actually happened.

@JG... I was hoping you'd comment on the significance of sedation for pain management. I know noting about that. So, thanks for the insight. My point re palliative care is only that it's not an indication on it's own that a patient's death is imminent. My mother was a palliative patient because there was no treatment for her brain cancer. But it also took a long time for her cancer to advance to point that it killed her. The last six months of her life were mortifying — probably not unlike where Rob is now. But she kept hanging on, even though she didn't want to. It was cosmically perverse.

You're absolutely right. And having done some palliative care home visits (including brain malignancies)... you're absolutely right.

Sedation presupposes severe pain refractory to "usual" doses of narcotics.

Pop quiz: who can tell what's wrong with this program?

Hint: How far in advance do you think the program was printed?

The City should call a by-election tomorrow because Ford is in no condition to be an effective Councillor. How can he return phone calls or emails? How can he visit his constituents?

He's got office staff as backup, y'know. Or, he *should* have office staff that's capable of fulfilling basic Ward 2 duties in his absence. Shouldn't Dan Jacobs have been in charge of setting up some kind of system, as opposed to just being RoFo's official press agent?

I'm less interested, frankly, in Ford's final days than I am in what comes after. I'm curious to hear how people think it will shake down.

Will people start coming out of the woodwork to tell even more incredible stories? Will things get published that had been 'sat on' for months/years? Will the video be released?

The crack video is evidence in Lisi's trial; until that trial is either conducted or else dropped, it can't be shown. Rob was just a potential witness in that trial, not a target of it. Now whether the Crown has a case if Rob's gone, that is another story.

I don't know what kind of news stories could be published after his death if they couldn't be published before. If your news story is correct, you have no need to fear a lawsuit (and the Fords never sue anyways). But I imagine some anecdotes and other information might shake loose.

True. It's just that, when you comb through the middle few-thousand pages of this thread (!), you start remembering a whole cavalcade of insanity and loose ends that never got tied up. What ever happened to all those wild stories of connections here and there - Windsor, Fort Mac, etc - and all those characters - Rinse, Jasmine, etc - who dropped in and out of the story? I wonder if any will start coming forward and saying, "here's the deal with the escort service/jailhouse beating/911 calls/drunk driving/etc etc."

Presumably at least some people feared Ford's reach and retaliation, and with him out of the picture (and a post-mortem bump in demand for news items related to Ford) will some people be tempted to sell their stories?

On another front, what becomes of Brazen 2, or any of the other open files on him? Will "unnamed sources" have a chat with the Star?

Would the sympathy of Rob's death give Doug impetus to run again for higher office?

Etc etc.

I'm waiting for Leanne to crash the funeral. Literally.

You're pretty much assured of that.

And even more so, what this presages for FoFam at large, now that their political meal ticket (and hence a critical "protective layer") is all but gone. Watch what happens with Deco, especially.

Another character to *maybe* monitor: the widowed Renata--what will happen to her, what stories might she have to tell, etc (esp. if she winds up being on the outs with FoFam)
