Noticed something very, very unusual this weekend about the TTC. No scheduled subway or RT closures this weekend. Could it be because of the Pan Am Games? Darn, that means things will get back to normal in September.

If so, maybe we should have more such special events.

External Route Announcement Trial
Helping customers board the bus

From the TTC website, at this link:

As part of our commitment to improving transit for persons with disabilities, the TTC is testing a new External Route Announcement (ERA) system that will indicate the route, direction, destination or next major stop as a pre-boarding announcement. The announcement will be made through a speaker located on the outside of the bus near the front door when the doors are opened.

The intent of the ERA system is help customers with vision loss know whether or not to board a bus and to help them navigate their journey on the TTC. Four buses at Wilson Garage have been equipped with the prototype.

If the announcements are comprehensible (unlike Miway or YRT), not broadcasted inside the bus too, and not broadcasted if someone is only exiting the back door then I'm fine with this.

If there's a way, the TTC will find a way to butcher this just as they do for most other "customer service" improvements. I wouldnt be surprised if its worse than Miway's external announcements.

Improvements to Off-Peak Services
–More Frequent and Less Crowded

From this report, from the July 29th TTC meeting:

Service increases are being made on these routes starting in Fall, 2015 so that, by the end of the year, all of the identified routes will have increased service at off-peak times, and reduced off-peakcrowding.

To those whose complain that the TTC is slow in implementing new improvements, the New York City MTA has started a "pilot" on a couple of its Staten Island bus routes. Bicycle racks. Something that the TTC has had for years.

From 2nd Avenue Sages, at this link.
The S53 and S93 bus routes will have front-mounted racks that can each fit two bikes. Customers are responsible for loading and unloading the bikes while the video reminds those cyclists of key safety tips to ensure drivers are aware of when riders are using the racks. The two routes both serve a college campus with many cyclists and bike routes on both sides of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

Starting on September 6th the MTA is testing a new way for you to see more of New York by bike. On the S53 and S93 routes, we have installed bicycle racks* to the front of the buses which can be used on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no extra charge to use the rack; just follow these steps and you’ll be on your way to cycling fun and great exercise!

There was another problem on the Yonge subway today, therefore no one is allowed to see when the bus is coming at Kipling station? C'mon TTC.

I'm confounded by the fact that both screens are showing different wording to describe the same issue. How does that even happen?
