When they start rolling out to a new route, they use the old level until the route is fully (or almost fully) converted, and then drop to the new level.
The best example is 512, which had 24 CLRVs through 2017, even though they started getting weekday Flexity's in late 2017. By summer 2018, the service summary was showing a mix of Flexity and CLRV cars, but still had 24 cars. And then after Labour Day 2018, they fully converted, and dropped from 24 cars to 19 cars.
The current amount of CLRVs out on 501 is 35? Looks like 40 CLRVs, 2 ALRVs, and one or 2 buses last week in AM peak. Current schedule says 42 cars (presumably the buses were standby or relieving to fill gaps).
If they are dropping it to 35 in January, then that's a big service cut, unless they get a lot of Flexitys in service.
LOL, I was expecting that and that was quick, considering the time I posted and you posted. Only 9 day turn around.4512 has entered service on 504B

501 was cut back to Humber Loop during that period, because of the Queensway reconstruction. So add 7 more cars (it was 10 buses in the February 18, 2018 board) to get 42.35 was what was scheduled in February 2018.
At some point, an in service test has to take place and it normally happens a day or so before it being prep for service. It currently westbound on King, west of Shaw. The car has only been here 7 days and hasn't done as much testing so far to meet the standards to be prep for service.I know, this is crazy, but 4513 is on 501 as an in service test.
I rode on 4512 around 5:30pm eastbound on the 504B4512 has entered service on 504B

If it follows the 9 day for 4512, Sat would be the earliest it could see service, but more like Monday-Wed.
There is another element to this situation. There are only three car barns and the one west end one is completely closed at the moment. Running cars into service on the long east-west routes takes a long time and has a huge number (well as many as exist and are serviceable) coming from two yards in the extreme east. As I understand it from reading here, Roncesvalles returns to service as the home base of an all Flexity 512 fleet in the new year.. A lot of circumstances need to change to get the city's streetcar routes back into full service.Likely will be that way for a while
