Walking over the Queen Viaduct today. Major construction work going on from Broadview to River Street, along Queen. Signage says January - April, 2026. I snapped some shots, since I happened to be there and some of the stuff going on is cool, though disruptive to the King and Queen Streetcar lines...

These cops are having a lot of fun there. I was joking with one of them, threatening to disobey him and walk into traffic :)

I hope the TTC will finally permanently fix the expansion joint on the bridge while the track work is going on further east. Too often they do not think of other projects that could/should be done to avoid more closures and diversions.

Wasn't like that late Thursday night as waterworks equipment still on site as I drove through the area.

Looks like the new standard of removing only top layer of concrete and replacing it plus the rails. Are there any pieces of TTC track that have not been rebuilt to this standard, except maybe Victoria from Dundas to Queen which will be done if Ontario line work ever finishes.

I think about 20 years ago, someone here commented that this technique is good once, and then you'd have to dig it all out again completely. I wonder how that is holding up.

I can't remember the last time the 504 has been uninterrupted to Broadview station for more than a few months before another year long interruption. A few years ago, there was water main reconstruction along Broadview, then there was track replacement around Dufferin, then there was track replacement on King from Victoria to Jarvis then there was work on Queen East near Broadview and now track replacement on Queen. Yeesh...

A decade+ of deferred maintenance in just about every city department will do that.

I can't remember the last time there hasn't been some kind of bustitution or construction detour on the streetcar network. It must be at least a decade.

Perhaps the Football World Cup will be the first occasion - if they have enough operators.

Russell yard was completed in 2025 to the new standards. Next place for the new standards will be Hillcrest. As to on street work, the Queensway was the last one other than intersections that I can recall.

Before the "new" standards, streetcars on The Queensway zoomed at or above the posted speed limit of 60 km/h. Today, the streetcars along the Queensway crawl along under the posted speed limit of 40 km/h. Great improvement... not.

I've always thought that the streetcar network map that they post on streetcars and the subway is actually a fantasy map because the streetcars never actually run as advertised

Later this year the TTC/City are supposed to replace the King/York intersection's special trackwork and then,

FROM TOInView

KING ST W. From: CLOSE AVE To: DUFFERIN ST
Replacement of the streetcar tracks/rails and the underlying support materials. Work may include resurfacing or reconstruction of the adjacent road/traffic lanes.
Construction Timeline Q3 2026 - Q3 2027

Then

KING ST W From: SHAW ST To: BATHURST ST
Replacement of the streetcar tracks/rails and the underlying support materials. Work may include resurfacing or reconstruction of the adjacent road/traffic lanes.
Construction Timeline Q3 2026 - Q4 2027

Then

KING ST W From: CHARLOTTE ST To: UNIVERSITY AVE
Replacement of the streetcar tracks/rails and the underlying support materials. Work may include resurfacing or reconstruction of the adjacent road/traffic lanes.
Construction Timeline Q4 2027 - Q4 2028

and then they will replace rail from York to Parliament. Presumably in 2028 and/or 2029.

Four intersections in that stretch that will be replaced with outdated switches (I assume)?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. Why would anyone at the city think that now, during a major years long obstruction to the Queen 501 that it's a good idea to shut down parts of its alternative, the 504 for that entire period? I get that some things need to get done but was there no plan to extend the longevity of the line until at least the 501 returns to regular service and better, when there's the Ontario Line as a viable cross downtown alternative?

And if they didn't have that foresight, why is this not all being done at once? Close the line for 2 or 3 months and run a bus but do all the work along the entire line in one shutdown, not years long scattered shutdowns.

And wasn't this track work supposed to coincide with the rebuilding of the King Street public realm, widening sidewalks to fit the King Street transit priority corridor, which has been delayed until the 2030s (if it gets built at all). So another years long closure?

Between these constant closures, complete unreliability of the TTC network and streetcars doubling as stench filled homeless shelters, I'm thinking of buying a car for the first time ever living in this city.

IDK about the 504, but I'm liking the 501 diversion onto Dundas. Normally I'd have to walk from Gerrard to Queen but can now catch it much closer to my place.
