RNDSQR has been posting renderings of a new project called "The Beacon". It's a "health and wellness centre" apparently on 17th Ave SW in Shaganappi (so I'm guess somewhere between 33rd Street and Crowchild).

This is a nice little project, I love the large windows. Hope it get's built.

I don't like it or dislike it, I find it to be what I would expect from a young bedroom community. I would like to see more of a town center or core, and I think it'll come some day despite the Nimbys.
Okotoks and Cochrane both have far more character, and both are much smaller. Airdrie's "downtown" is a shitty mall and a couple strip malls. Suburban power centres have more personality than Airdrie does.

Both those places were larger than Airdrie up until the late 1970's. That is the real problem with Airdrie, it was nothing until the late 1970's, does not have a river flowing through it either. If there had been a river rather than a creek you would have seen much more development earlier on. More character builds in the early days. Even Didsbury has more character, it was also larger early on but not sure when Airdrie surpassed it. Downtown will hopefully be getting a revamp here soon, city already tried to rush some stuff through, but not enough community involvement has causes it to be scrapped. Multiple vacant properties that would be ripe for development and spurring something for downtown, but I'm not holding my breath anything good will ever happen. I like Airdrie for ease of access to highway 2 and also have lived here all my life. Oh, Nose Creek Park is pretty nice little park on the creek, but it is young, maybe 25 years old now so give it some time to mature more!

Forgot to mention, we also have our first brewery opening up in Airdrie this month! So although I'm not a big drinker of beer I'm hoping they will be successful and put out some good beers!

IMO Calgary suburbs like Coverntry Hills, Tuscany, Cranston etc, are much like Airdrie, except not having the diversity of Airdrie. Airdrie also has more potential because it's a city on its own, and can build and shape its downtown over time. Those Calgary suburbs won't ever change.

Oh whoops!
