I wonder how much the height difference is. Usually office floors have higher ceilings.

It's not bad for what it is. I like the glass atrium and blue circle feature. It's firmly dug in to the early 2000s. It's hard to remember how terrible those entire 2 blocks used to be. :)

    General Construction Updates

It is definitely more expensive to go downward. Like, the construction cost is multiple times more expensive. Excavation is one of the most expensive and time-consuming parts of construction. However, depending on soil types and building weight on top, a deep foundation may be necessary for the...

The Twenty-Teens: when people used LEDs, white cladding, and engineered wood entrances in their buildings and giant letters to tell you where you were.

You can see exactly where the c-train goes.

Good point. Hopefully new spots can be used as leverage when people complain about the closing of other parking lots.

    General Construction Updates

Hmmm. As a rule I'm against using land for parking in any capacity, but if it's going to cover up the CPR and convert some otherwise stagnant land... We could always tear it down in 20 years one we need a new place to build I suppose.

I actually like this project a lot, especially the scale, usage, location, and grade level. it's no head turner, but a well-positioned integrated hotel will do good for the neighbourhood. As for PBA, I wonder if the updated design is better than the last.

Calgary | CalgaryNEXT | Urban District Redevelopment Plan

Both areas (Stampede/Vic Park and WV) have room for massive redevelopment. Riverwalk will hopefully join them one day. I agree with Urbanwarrior about WV being more hopeless to redevelop without a massive intervention, but I think the stadium is only an engine to get things started. In the WV...

Calgary | CalgaryNEXT | Urban District Redevelopment Plan

I'd be OK with either option (EV or WV), but I have a few thoughts. The creosote is exactly the reason for a major public development there, not a reason against it. Much of the problem is remedied just by excavating the soil. I believe residential development might have stricter EA...

    Calgary | TELUS Sky | 222.19m | 60s | Westbank | Bjarke Ingels Group

There are good things happening architecturally all over Canadian cities right now. I wouldn't be too quick to throw either Vancouver or Toronto to the top of the pile though. Where both those cities do excel is in single family homes - and I am (earnestly) talking about high-design and...

Calgary | CalgaryNEXT | Urban District Redevelopment Plan

From the city, I'd advocate a linear connection from 17th St SW to 19th St NW, under the CPR/C-train, over the river. That would bring a fair amount of Hillhurst within walking distance of Sunalta Station and create a new corridor from Lion's Park to Sunalta and the Beltline. Overall, my main...

    Calgary | Arris - 5th and Third | 142.03m | 41s | Embassy Bosa | Amanat Architect

That's the approximate retail value that a condo-buyer pays to have a stall these days. The construction cost is a bit less and depends on a bunch and has a diminishing cost per stall.

We are certainly living in the age to gigantic letters telling you where you are.

It's going to be so weird to have a building there. It's been such a visible open space as long as I've been alive. It's also the only gap in south riverfront development from 8th St to Centre St. Next on the chopping block: the lot by 8th st & 4th ave!
