It looks like a 40 storey tower might be coming to that corner.. or at least the developers that bought the land want to develop a 40 storey rental unit. I don't see a 40 storey building at this corner.. There's no way it will go through. At least not without a fight from the community!

Well, this seems outrageous for that corner. The recent planning framework that was developed and approved by Council in 2013 (the North Downtown Yonge Study) says that "Development and redevelopment should reinforce the core village area as a low to mid-rise pedestrian oriented main street." It goes on to say that any development along Church between Wood and Charles Street must adhere to an angular plane of 44 degrees above 16 metres. They haven't formally put an application in yet, but this will be a huge fight since it'd mean throwing out the newly updated Official Plan policies and doing something that's totally not contemplated for the Village.
 
I would fight a 40-storey tower for that corner tooth and nail. It would destroy the character of the village. I'm not saying the village needs to be poorly maintained older buildings, but a tower shouldn't be built at that intersection.
 
But isn't half a block from a subway station exactly the sort of place such towers should be built?

This is the type of argument often used to justify over-development. Intensification is a good thing and is needed, but it needs to be balanced with the existing and planned context of an area. Church Street is not a high-rise place. It's a relatively stable character area that I would argue is worth preserving/reinforcing.

It looks like the Timothy's space in the Alexus has been leased because the for lease sign is gone. Anybody know what's coming?

Also the glass awning from the old 7-24 Video has come down in the new RBC space.
 
I hope North of Brooklyn on Church is doing okay. I'm worried based on the number of lightbulbs burned out in their sign.

I knew someone who rented an apartment in that building. It was really tiny, but it was the unit with the giant patio on the roof of the barbershop (where that one guy gave you a handy in the backroom, if you were so inclined).

There was simply no better location at Pride. Random people were always asking if they could come up there with us. Looking back now we never stopped to consider if the roof had a weight limit and could actually support 50 people on it.

I recall the apartments in there having some amazing vintage lighting and bathroom fixtures that will no doubt be salvaged and resold. They even have the porcelain sinks with separate hot and cold water faucets.

A lot of neighbourhood character is about to be lost.

Just outside the Village - the Magic Oven at 6 Wellesley West that closed recently is now Coconut Bay, a Thai restaurant. I can't find their website though.

That's great! After Pi Thoms and a few other places closed, there aren't many Thai places left (except Just Thai on Church). I hope it's good!
