Downtown Transcend Coffee shutting down, blames Rogers Place arena opening
An independent coffee chain will have one less location in Edmonton in a few weeks, and the owner says the new downtown arena is to blame.

“While arena-goers are keen to find venues to enjoy a drink and some food before a game, they had no interest in coffee,” said a statement from Poul Mark, the founder and CEO of Transcend Coffee.

The statement said Transcend Coffee partnered with Kelly Pope, the developer and owner of the Mercer Warehouse, in the fall of 2014 to open a cafe in the basement of the building on 104 Avenue and 104 Street. It is kitty-corner to Rogers Place arena.

“Both parties understood that the location was a risky venture given its more remote downtown location and the constant interruptions in the area at the time, due to the construction of the [arena.]”

BODY BY BENNETT EXPANDING WITH ICE DISTRICT

Edmontonians are starting to get a better idea of what to expect in ICE District. Body By Bennett is set to open up its second location inside the JW Marriott Hotel in ICE District.

“We are pumped about it!” said Oilers Director of High Performance and gym owner Simon Bennett. “We are heavy into the planning and organization. You see the building going up, it’s happening right before our eyes.”

Bennett explained this new facility will be an “exciting concept for Edmonton” and could differ from his current gym located west of downtown on High Street.

Transcend closure re-opens debate about downtown revitalization
For an urban retail business, success is all down to people on the street — and Transcend Coffee just wasn't attracting them.

"We needed 100 more people walking through the door each day," said Poul Mark, reflecting on this week's closure of his shop in the Mercer Warehouse building on 104 Street, mere steps from Rogers Place arena.

Mark's decision to shutter his third, and newest, location this week has opened an ongoing debate about the success of Edmonton's larger downtown revitalization project — though many think the discussion is wrongheaded or that the shop itself wasn't the right fit for downtown's changing clientele.

Garth Brooks a business boon for Edmonton Ice District
Nine sold-out Garth Brooks concerts in Edmonton boosted business for bars, restaurants and hotels in the city's Ice District.

Brooks sold more than 140,000 tickets during a week-long streak of performances from Feb. 17 to Feb. 25 at Rogers Place. His shows tripled clientele at some nearby venues, according to Edmonton's Downtown Business Association.

Kelly's Pub on 104th Street was a patchwork of plaid and cowboy boots all week, said general manager Jennifer Diep.

"It's been amazing. It's been really, really busy," Diep said. "We're very fortunate."

Business at the pub has been steady since it opened on 104th Street four years ago, she added. But events at the new arena can easily double the day's number of customers.

Katz Group wants a special deal for liquor store in Ice District
The Katz Group is asking for a special bylaw exemption to open a liquor store in the Ice District and Edmonton city council indicated it is at least willing to listen.

The major downtown developer wants a liquor store on the ground floor of the Stantec Tower, now under construction near the corner of 102 Street and 103 Avenue with a grocery store planned for the second floor.

But the new liquor store would be roughly 30 metres — just across the street — from an existing liquor store located in an alley just outside Ice District boundaries. Zoning rules ban anyone from opening a new liquor store within 500 metres of an existing store anywhere within the mature neighbourhood area of the city.

The Katz Group made its plea at the last public hearing of December, arguing the new store would be one of the safest in Edmonton.

In a 6-5 vote, council decided to require tighter rules around the exemption — on the location, number of stores and size — before considering it for approval. The application returns to council Feb. 12.

Downtown Coun. Scott McKeen said he made that compromise motion to prevent the request by the Katz Group from being shot down completely, offering his support because both the downtown business association and the downtown community league supported the idea.

“I was trying to be pragmatic,” said McKeen, adding a denial from council could mean little anyway. Several developers denied permits under Edmonton’s existing rules have appealed to the subdivision and development appeal board and won.

“So why don’t we, in partnership with them, get some regulations in place so it’s not huge and we know where it’s going,” he said.

2021 World Junior Hockey Championship

Not directly Ice District news but the seats for this tournament are sold out and I've read/heard talk of a major outdoor festival being held in the Rogers Place Plaza all during the tournament. Would like to see them ratchet this up even more now that the tickets to all the games are sold out. OK Katz Group/OEG/COE/whoever, get that plaza finished.
 
Tim Shipton today: "We’ve got Rogers Hometown Hockey coming in at the end of March, it will be the first big event in the plaza. We’ve got a big focus to get people into the plaza in phase one."

The new store currently under construction, which will likely open in April, will more than double the size of its original existing store to 8,200 square feet on three levels in the newly-developed ICE District on 102nd Avenue and 103rd Street.

The massive three-level store is the next chapter for the retailer which continues to operate in the struggling downtown core which recently saw the exit of Hudson's Bay and Holt Renfrew.

My guess is they are opening somewhere in s/w corner of the Stantec podium, but the address doesn't jive?
 
I think The Helm is opening in the Encore Tower, not anywhere in ICE District - in fact I already posted this article in the Encore thread. The writer is a Calgarian who clearly doesn't spend enough time in Edmonton.
