40 workers at Kent Bridge, Ont. greenhouse test positive for COVID-19

Entire workforce at Greenhill Produce tested for the disease caused by coronavirus

A number of people at an Ontario greenhouse have tested positive for COVID-19.

Dr. David Colby, medical officer of health for Chatham-Kent, said there are 40 positive cases of COVID-19 among the workforce of Greenhill Produce near Kent Bridge.

According to Greenhill Produce operations manager Justin Geertsema, slightly less than half of his company's workforce are currently in self-isolation due to COVID-19.

"We're not sure what the next few weeks will look like," he said. "It'll be difficult for everybody, but all we know is that we just have such an amazing team here."

Colby said the entire workforce of more than 100 employees have been tested, and so far 22 tests have come back negative.

"We've tested everybody at the facility," said Colby. "It's not a company that's open to the public so it's not something that we are expecting that there's going to be community cases associated with."

No one who has tested positive has been hospitalized at this time.

In Chatham-Kent, there are now about 75 cases of COVID-19, a significant jump from the 46 cases the region had seen previous to the outbreak at the facility. Colby said 40 cases are from employees at the greenhouse.

The majority of the workers at Greenhill Produce who have tested positive for the disease are migrant workers, but most are not new arrivals, having been in Canada four months to one year or more, said Colby.

Helps when you can shut off from the world ^

I'm not sure how true that is. New Zealand may be comparatively small and geographically isolated from large population countries, I suspect their economy is as largely dependent on international trade as most others.

A very important conversation about all the deferred surgeries and treatments here in Ontario due to Covid. This includes cardiac surgery, cancer surgery, chemo, transplants and more typically less serious elective surgeries as well.

I've got tickets for Singing in the Rain in London, UK for August 2020. I keep looking on the website to see if they'll cancel and refund due to Covid19, but so far they're still taking tickets for July 24th onwards.

Sadly, this is the tip of the iceberg.

Not counted are all the initial specialist visits, diagnostic tests and biopsies that haven't happened yet.

The knock-on effect of these delays will easily stretch in to the many hundreds with the not inconsiderable risk we may have more die of these second-order effects than Covid itself.

Toronto's SickKids Hospital declares COVID-19 outbreak

Published Tuesday, April 28, 2020 4:59PM EDT

TORONTO -- The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto has declared a COVID-19 outbreak.

SickKids said in a statement earlier this week that a patient had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Since then, his parents and one health-care worker have contracted the virus, the hospital said in a statement.

The hospital says one other patient has also tested positive for the virus, but is not connected to the first patient.

With nearly every long term care home in Quebec infected, I expect one line of thinking is that everyone who was going to die from Covid19 probably already is either dead or on their way out. The reason we're socially isolating is not to prevent everyone from catching Covid19, but to ensure the rate of infection doesn't overwhelm the heath care system. Perhaps in Quebec they've reached the point where outside of long term care homes, the system can cope.
