She is rightfully concerned because between February and August when she could not visit, both her (via phone conversations) and the staff have noticed that his mental decline has increased. This cannot be directly contributed to the lockdown, he is, after all, 99, but one wonders. Beyond family visits, they did have a fairly extensive program of daily entertainment and all sorts of diversion activity; all of which curtailed.

I know some LTCs have cancelled visitation (exceptional circumstances aside) completely already.

A really good interview on TVO's Agenda with epidemiologist Raywat Deonandan

No huge revelations. But thoughtful, thorough answers about the pandemic and Ontario's response to it.

Includes some good info on testing techniques, false positives/negatives and a strategy to better utilized the right tests on the right people, in the right place.

Meanwhile, across the border...........in Michigan............

The State Supreme Court has stripped the Governor (A Democrat) of her power to issue emergency orders (such as business closures, or stay-at-home orders), except when authorized by the legislature.

Said Court's decision was a 4-3 split along partisan lines. (Republicans voted to strip the Governor of her power, Democrat judges dissented).

The legislature in Michigan is controlled by Republicans.

The best plan:

So yep, the government sat on the hands, lost a few months during the lull and still ended up having to pay up, rush the job and missing the wave. The most comprehensive plan in Canada that take days to explain indeed - it will take more than a few days of inquiry, I'd say.

Ontario is reporting 653 cases of #COVID19 as nearly 46,300 tests were completed. Locally, there are 284 new cases in Toronto, 104 in Peel and 97 in Ottawa. 64% of today’s cases are in people under the age of 40. There are 435 more resolved cases.

seems like we running a fine line between it going out of control to managed 2nd wave.

Based on health experts i read the positivity has to be around 3% then they may look to go back to stage 2.

If we sort of remain in high cases but high test amounts I think we are going to just deal with a lot of cases.

The problem is the 2-day backlog in testing and difficulty to actually get tested. Though I sympathise with 'the government' in this situation and understand their desire to balance health with the economy but ..... there are really NO excuses for the testing and laboratory backlogs and the general messaging confusion. They have had 6+ months to sort out testing and if groups should be kept to 6 and, if you should not mix with those outside your household how can we also have casinos, indoor restaurants, banquet halls and schools operating?

Be honest I dont hear good solutions from either side about this.

It seems its either keep things open and minimize deaths or everyone stays at home and collects Cerb till spring and it's rather obvious the federal govt has no interest in blanket payments to Canadians anymore.

I think the govt should increase testing but I am not in favour of a 2nd lockdown at all.

I think some solutions are:
-Only groups of 2 for restaurants from different houses (lets not stop people dating lol)
- People can go in larger groups if they in the same house (a family).
- Ban Banquet hall parties but keep civil weddings open or religious places open.
-Put all kids over grade 9 online only.

Ontario is not as bad as Quebec, Our positive rate is like 1.5% compared to like 6-7% for them.

I did not say there are 'sides' (we are, or should all be, in this together!) and agree that a balance must be found - and MAY have been found - between health and the economy. My main problem with the Ontario government is the chaos of their recent communications and the growing backlog of testing. The Start reports that they were repeatedly warned about this for months. https://www.thestar.com/opinion/sta...-they-just-didnt-want-to-spend-the-money.html

Sorry, there are no sides - if you are not willing to close sit in dining, bars or what not - the spread will worsen and few will have the confidence to go out and dine, the end result is the same (worse in the case of uncontrolled spread, because now you are dragging the health system with it). And yes, make the rules more complex - it just meant no one will follow them properly, enforce them properly (nevermind communicating it properly - the government couldn't even do it with the social bubble/Thanksgiving thing without giving out conflicting information and creating confusion). So yes, keep stalling, keep this both sides talk - and more people will catch it and die. It's that simple. The more one delays, the more one will have to resort to increasingly severe measures down the road.

Also, your notion of "good solution" sounds like wanting your cake and eating it too. LIfe unfortunately doesn't necessarily operate on wishes.

Just a few thoughts..

Personally I don't give two s***s about a person's love life when it comes to protecting the general population from a deadly pandemic. If I have to choose between going on a date and getting sick (or everyone else sick) or staying home, I will stay home. Anyone who is more concerned about going on dates than their own health needs to give their head a shake.

Yeaaaaa there is no way to prove that everyone in the same party is from the same household. Just because someone shares the same last name doesn't mean they are living in the same household. That is a loophole that people would exploit in an instant.

Again, NO! Civil weddings can be quite large while banquet halls can be cramped with bad ventilation. Even City Hall has small chapels.

Mosques and temples are hard to control in some cases. They are all about the communal experience while cramming people into warehouse style buildings with poor ventilation. I know in Scarborough there are some light industrial buildings that are turned into mosques which were never designed with pandemics in mind.

Allow me to use the example of the cleric from New Delhi who stated that "a muslim is never impure and cannot impart an impurity to another muslim". People were using this to claim that covid was not a big deal and packing themselves into a mosque because of what their cleric said.

The point I am trying to make here is that diehard religious fanatics or sects will deny that covid is a threat and go against all by-laws along with their own safety in the name of their faith. Some places of worship are cognisant of the fact that Covid-19 is a threat but not all of them do leading to mass infections.

ALL
students should be online. I know it is an inconvenience but living across the street from an elementary school I see how many parents and students are in close contact coming/going at the start and end of the days. The rooms are tiny, students cannot distance properly and while the TDSB is doing their best they are not really doing much.

Schools like Martingrove CI have 5 cases but remain open and should have been closed.

The other thing too is that if parents or students are infected it puts the neighbourhood at risk when they are coming and going. All it takes is for me to brush past an infected student or parent walking my dog and I can get sick. If students were online only this would not be an issue.

This is a pandemic not a snowstorm, students should be relegated to only online studies.

Before anyone says masks are mandatory, how many 4-12 year olds actually wear masks like they are supposed to? When I was that age I wouldn't.
