Errrrrr....ummmmm.....yeah, on to reality, have any of the bidding companies released their draft proposals yet? Not to nag, but you guys sound so upset over this, and we have not one solid fact yet. Speculation is all well and good, but, come on, get a grip, and for the love of god, stop criticizing each other. A public forum is to express yourself, not attack each other, please, I beg you, try to respect each other (ohhhh I know I'm just asking for it, I can just imagine what you're going to say!), and lets talk about the possible casino. Seriously, I'm kind of excited about it, if, and that's a big if, they do it right (ie - right location, a design that will compliment our skyline, etc) I don't know, for some weird reason I have this nightmare of a roller coaster looping around the CN Tower and FCP and back into a 50 storey roman temple next to the CNE convention centre! Time will tell, stay tuned boys and girls.

Let me clarify that, yes i am a fan of having a casino here in Toronto.....just like many of you are fans of having, brothels, affordable housing, hostels, parks, squares, etc. etc. etc. here..so what? Hey, different strokes for different folks

His quotes of my original remarks were related to plunking his favourite type of building size on the Elgin and Wintergarden site. So if any confusion was created, he is the originator of it. He also has not come right out and say that he would be fully opposed to putting up such a building on that site. That just might be too "socialist" for him.

I've seen this speculation in a few different posts now. What's the reasoning behind it? Why would the proposed Gehry towers have any impact on a possible casino?

I am hoping it sucks up enough investor demand that there's nothing left for a cesspool casino. Hopefully Mirvish+Gehry can show the province there are alternatively successful ways to raise revenue and increase tourism besides bankrupting the local middle class and taking business away from more worthy independent entertainment venues, museums, hotels, restaurants etc in the city. We're not Macau or Vegas. A casino in Toronto would never be a destination, the same way the casinos Montreal, Detroit or Atlantic City are not big destinations. The east coast climate is too cold and unwelcoming... It would only be frequented by locals mindlessly pulling levers on slot machines. A casino here would be symbolic of failure.

I'm not sure why a condo development would suck investment away from the casino proposal. The condo development is supported by individual investors / future residents while the casino is funded by the casino corp, whoever that ends up being. Moreover, the 2600 extra residential units proposed to be built very close to two of the preferred casino locations along with the museum and new commercial space seems to me to be added profit potential for the casinos. More people in the area means more customers.

I still don't see how the Gehry development and the casino project should be considered mutually exclusive.

A casino in Toronto would never be a destination, the same way the casinos Montreal, Detroit or Atlantic City are not big destinations. .

Hmm, the Montreal Casino gets about 10.5 million visitors/year, in comparison the last i heard Ontario Place couldnt even attract 1/2 million visitors a year..lets not talk about Atlantic City which gets over 30 million visitors a year...
Come-on, at the moment all Toronto can do is dream of those figures
