I wouldn't mind if Ontario followed CAMH's recommendation and raised the legal drinking age back to where it used to be: 21.

"CAMH recommends Ontario’s drinking age be raised to 21"
http://toronto.ctvnews.ca/more/loca...g-age-be-raised-to-21-1.1334080#ixzz2zjgakXCn

Sure works great in the U.S... NOT.

I'm from the European family school of parents giving their kids a bit of wine or beer at dinner on occasion, so you don't feel the need to get utterly shitfaced at the first opportunity just to spite them.

But I guess you can't force parents to implement that in their homes, so I'd say 18 is fine for bars not to serve a teen who's alone or with peers. Maybe 14 if out with a parent/guardian who says it's okay.

This is my thinking...

Mothers Against Drunk Driving ( MADD ) also supports the CAMH recommendation.

"Why 21?"
http://www.madd.org/underage-drinking/why21/

MADD would support a minimum drinking age of 100 - they're neo-prohibitionists.

My feeling is that if 18 is good enough to vote and automatically be tried and sentenced as an adult, it should be good enough to drink and smoke at that age as well. Adult = adult.

Agreed. MADD are insane. Even Candace Lightner, the founder, called them neo-prohibitionists and said that the organization has moved far beyond what she ever intended, or believed in.

That website claims: "European countries have worse problems than America does, as far as binge drinking and drinking to intoxication". But the citation they list is a study of the effects of parental monitoring on risk behaviours (i.e. not just alcohol) for African American, adolescent females residing in low-income neighbourhoods (N=522). I can see MADD's policy recommendations are based on a rigorous examination of the scientific literature.

It's unbelievable that in this day and age there are educated people who believe a drinking age of 21 makes any sense whatsoever.

Problems with alcohol are cultural in nature, and driving teenage drinking underground can only make matters worse.

Edit: just looked at MADD's reasoning. Brutal. They go on and on about traffic fatalities, but anyone with the sligthest bit of knowledge on the subject can tell you that the countries that perform best in keeping traffic fatalities down today also tend to have lower legal drinking ages. These guys have no scientific integrity whatsoever.

The escort twitter account is just trolling for hits by using rob ford. They're also hash-tagging the raptors who are trending on twitter now too.

How come Ford and driver are sitting higher than everyone else in the same row?

^^ either they are sitting on top of their fold-down seats (not having folded them down) or ... they have really well-padded butts! (we know one of them does! ;))

There is a difference between using a substance, using it to excess, and using it to excess on an ongoing basis.
A teenager might use alcohol to excess because they are testing their limits. They might grow up to have no problems with alcohol.
An adult might use alcohol to excess because they are temporarily going through a bad time, or they are testing the limits they didn't test as a teenager.
A teenager or an adult might use alcohol, or drugs, or other substances, to excess on an ongoing basis because they have physical/emotional/psychological/spiritual problems.

For the three quarters of the population who will not really have mental health issues, the legal drinking age won't really matter.
For the quarter of the population who will struggle with addiction and mental health, the age absolutely matters.
