And later they are talking about bring a casino to Toronto and they keep bringing up it will bring union jobs. I mean he should make up his mind - are you for union jobs or not. I was actually surprised I heard people say they are against casino.
Rob Ford probably doesn't care if a union member makes $500 an hour as long as the gamblers are paying them by supporting the Casino.

Paying a cleaner $32 an hour is not acceptable to him or me when the taxpayer is the employer and the going rate in the public sector is about half that amount.

My understanding is that the $32/hr is simply another falsification/misrepresentation by the Ford brothers. Including in the number the cost of the benefits that all city employees get (as has been stated earlier in the thread) is not representative of the amount they take home. If the HR dept at the company I work for can be trusted, the monetary value of all an employee's benefits represents about 50% of their total cost to the company. If things are the same in the public sector, that would make a cleaner's hourly rate about $16/hr.

16 + 50% of 16 = only 24

According to city staff (i.e. not the Mayor) the numbers are: cash wage $26/hr, total with benefits $32/hr. According to a union, most cleaners in the private sector in Toronto get not much more than minimum wage. There are already contractors working for some city agencies that pay their workers $12/hr cash. No doubt there's savings to be had, though I'd hate to be a worker taking that kind of cut.

My cousins buddy hauls a dump truck hauling garbage for the city making about $40/hour and has every Friday OFF for the rest of his life! Don't tell me govn't jobs aren't that cushy cuz they definitely are. My mom used to be a nurse and I think they got like 70 or 80 sick days all paid per year! I get 8 sick days from my private company per year...go figure.

First weigh-in this morning in a while he's up a pound to 312.

I wonder if the lettuce-clad PETA ladies will give this rare weigh-in any extra press? If he had lost weight, it would've been the perfect storm for a Sun News reporter... bikini's and a positive RoFo headline.

You read my post wrong. If benefits represent 50% of your cost to the company then your total cost to the company is twice what you make. $16 is 50% of $32.

$26/hr is maybe more than I would want to pay for unskilled labour, but I agree that $12 is too low.

hahahaha... I'll bet that every one of the numbers in this little rant got pulled straight out of your butt, but I'll play along: Could you cite a source for 'your cousin's buddy''s wage and hours? Can you find a nurse with 70 sick days (that's an awe-inspiring figure, but I guess you could get there since you don't want nurses coming in sick.) And, can you give me the HR address for your company? I don't get any sick days. Our system puts sicks days and vacation leave in the same bucket -- if you're not coming in, no need to tell us why. But it's taken off your vacation.

Then you got your numbers wrong. Benefits are not typically 100% of the cash wage, even if you fully cost the pension plan (which the city doesn't). 50% is much more like it.

The indusry average is 10-12 days.

I was simply repeating what one of our HR representatives had told me about the company I work for since that was my point of reference. This was clearly stated in my post.

I think that there are some private sector workers who work under-the-table, cash only. No benefits, no EI, no CPP, and no taxes. A little like how some workers in European countries are doing, but now in trouble. In the public sector, they have to pay over-the-table, which includes everything, including taxes.

Do you know what the word 'source' means? It means YOU cite the company and contract with the city. Or YOU cite the hospital and nurse's local that has those sick days. Or YOU continue to pull things out of your butt. Nethire? C'mon, that's not even trying.

He works for the city, you know those dark trucks with the cn tower picture on the side of them :). Why would I lie about something like that. All the info is available on the governments websites. Average wage for a truck driver is about $20-$25/ hour in Toronto. That's what he says he makes and he works a little extra everyday to have his Fridays off. Nurses sick days used to be bankable, not sure if they still are as the previous mayor was fighting hard to have that changed. Trust me, government jobs are very well paid and you need to pretty much commit murder to get fired from one. Hell cops that are suspended for being dirty, still get paid while being investigated. The hospital was Etobicoke General, she worked there for twenty years. I think she mentioned once while Sars was going on that she was being paid close to $100/hour. Now i have all due respect for these workers who risk their lives, but come on. Private sector jobs are not nearly as well paid as government sector jobs, of equivalent merit. That's my point.
