It was too much to ask for to have a football stadium be just a football stadium, wasn't it?
 
There is the potential to do the Stadium Series with the four American teams teams celebrating their 50th. The only "American" Winter Classic I see if the Leafs do not get it would be Pittsburgh vs Philadelphia. Bettman will want to make sure NBC Sports attends to the Americans, as everyone has stated already. Though in the event the Leafs do get the Winter Classic, Rogers may push for the Leafs to play at the Skydome to make sure they can get around 50,000 vs 40,000 at BMO. Now, I don't know if the Rogers deal with the NHL could help land the Leafs the Winter Classic since Rogers is part owners, or perhaps just no influence at all.

On the other hand, Ottawa has been wanting the Heritage Classic since 2013, and have had meetings with Bettman about it, mainly due to Canada's 150th birthday, and to show off the City's newly renovated stadium. TD Place holds 24,000 but it can be expanded to 30,000 for special events, and if they do that, then they would have a better chance of landing the Heritage Classic.
 
With all these cities in line ... seems the simplest thing to do is let every city host an outdoor game each season.

It's expandable to 40,000+ for special events.
 
The 2017 Heritage Classic in Ottawa definitely makes sense. Yes, the stadium can be expanded to a 30K+ capacity. Both endzone areas have been designed to accommodate temporary seating. As mentioned, 2017 is also Canada's 150th, and Ottawa is planning a whole host of events surrounding that. If they hold it in early February, it could also be coordinated with Winterlude. It would be pretty cool to do a "skate to the hockey game" via the Canal. Also worth pointing out 2017 is Ottawa's 25th season.

There's also the potential for the NHL to do a home and home between Ottawa and Toronto, with both games being outdoors.
