I am really liking the look of this project! What's not to like? Embarrassingly, I have to admit that I had to look up "esports". I didn't know this was a thing.

Not much more land to develop if the CNE continues.
I think we need to change the parking lots into something more desirable if it is going to continue for many years to come. I rarely see people parking there is so some paving stones and plantings would be great

There's room to develop along Lake Shore. Build as close to the property line as possible and in the future, when Lake Shore is lined with towers, urbanize the street by eliminating 2 lanes of traffic, going down from 6 to 4 and widen the sidewalks.
The CNE only needs a narrow corridor along Princes' Blvd. to host the outdoor portion of the fair. Food and game carts and most of the rides are already lined up along the streets. All these new buildings will in fact augment the fair. Think of the events The Ex can host inside of this new digital pavilion.

E-sports is just a more modern term for what are essentially professional video game competitions.
E-sports are hugely popular in East Asia, especially South Korea.

well they surge and fade depending on the games, too.
South Korea is huge for RTS games. Europe for FPS/RTS. North America is big for fighters/FPS. MOBA games are big everywhere.
A lot of these arenas are being built because Overwatch has been popular and somehow attracted a LOT of investment.
But just a cursory look at the Toronto Defiant overwatch team... 7 of the 9 players are korean lol

Looks great to me.
It'll draw crowds from all over town, which a true 'neighbourhood' would complain about.
It's hard to get landmark architecture if it needs to be ringed at the base with retail and restaurants.

If E-Sports goes completely defunct, at least this will be a much needed mid sized venue for many other events.

Seems like quite a flexible venue, and would likely be used for non esports events throughout the year anyway.

Not just that, but e-sports would not last as long under the current model.
Having one video game company dictate how the games would be played would not be a sustainable model. The e-sports scene for that particular game can be cancelled completely under the whims of a single video game company to the chagrin of the game's fans:

The basics of a particular game should be in the public domain, though the specific rules could be copyrighted by a sports league.
For example, the basic rules of baseball are in the public domain, but the specific rules of Major League Baseball are copyrighted by the office of the commissioner of Major League Baseball. After all, Major League Baseball doesn't own the concept of a baseball diamond for example.
For another example, the descendants of James Naismith don't collect royalties every time basketball is played, even before 2009 (as basketball in general isn't copyrighted, but the specific rules set by NCAA and the NBA are).
The same could be done for e-sports.
The basic version of the game (primarily the basic mechanics) could have the source code be in the public domain, but the specific parameters and aesthetic designs could be copyrighted by the e-sports league.
This way, if the video game company were to become defunct, the video game could still be played and the e-sports league could continue to tweak the rules.

I doubt we will ever hear much again about this proposal with $80 million to spend on something they say will cost $500 million.
But regarding video games, I think the incredulity from some of the older folks is not about the popularity of people playing them, but more about people paying to watch others play them.
