They lost 20-40 percent business over the past year.

Well, over the past year, two out of the big three automakers went bankrupt, 2 of the 5 largest investment banks disappeared along with countless smaller ones, one of the most famous Canadian companies in the world Nortel went under, the prices of oil droped over 60% from a year ago, and 11% of our workforce is now out of a job.

Sh!t this St.Clair thing did alot of damage.

LOL! Well said.

As for compensation... is having an address on an improved streetcar route, with new and better streetscaping not enough compensation? SOS needs to STFU already.

Shades of those businesses along Bloor trying to shake down the city over the delays in the Bloor Street reconstruction. Doubt they'll get anywhere either.

SOS caused the delay...

They should stop whining and see the bigger picture already.

When the line is complete, they will be silentely thrill that A LOT MORE customers will go on St-Clair.

Ingrats...

I wonder if the merchants along St. Clair would like to obtain a tax reduction for the past year or so, provided they are in agreement that commercial taxes will have to rise in years to come to offset lost income to the city as Transit City is rolled out on Sheppard, Finch, Eglinton and other streets. They should ask if they want to set a precedent that will see their taxes increased for many years to come to offset losses elsewhere in the city, since that is in effect what they are asking for themselves.

While doing some research, I came across some griping from Yonge Street merchants in 1954 about the losses they incurred as the Yonge Subway was built. I guess things don't change.

This quote is from A Brief History of Transit in Toronto at Transit Toronto:

In 1861, Alex Easton, a Philadelphia native came to Toronto to help set up a conglomerate of local business owners to build a street railway in the city. Having travelled to New York, Philadelphia and Boston, he was an ardent promoter of street railways and wanted to promote his new, horse-drawn ‘Haddon Car’. On May 29, City Council granted this group, now known as the Toronto Street Railway Company (TSR) a 30 year franchise. Easton, now president of the company, had his men start work on laying down tracks, and Toronto’s first streetcar route started operation on September 11, 1861...

...On May 16, 1891, the city sought to take over the system...
...The Toronto Railway Company took over operations on September 1, 1891...
...electric streetcars started running on Church Street on August 16, 1892. The last horse car would gallop up McCaul Street on the Dovercourt route on August 31, 1894...
...On January 1, 1920, voters approved municipal operation of all streetcar service in the city and, on September 1, 1921, the city owned Toronto Transportation Commission was born...

It took from May to September in 1861 to lay tracks for streetcars on Yonge & King Streets. Of course, there were no EA's to worry about, they just went and did it. However, no air conditioning and no heating, and the tracks are now stronger and will last longer.

I find it interesting that every 30 years or so in the past, there was some sort of change in public transit. Today, the streetcars are 30 years old and will, hopefully, be changed. It should also be noted that it look two years to change all the streetcars from horses to electricity.

Oakwood & St. Clair intersection closed

Today, Monday, they closed the intersection at Oakwood & St. Clair. Should last until July 9. There were signs displaying that the intersection will be closed, but without a date. Found the notice only today, at this link:

Beginning at 6:00am on Monday June 22 to 7:00am on Thursday, July 9, 2009, the replacement of streetcar tracks and work to critical underground infrastructure will require a partial road closure at the intersection of St. Clair/Oakwood. The work will primarily affect north and southbound traffic on Oakwood. One lane EB and WB will be maintained on St. Clair across the intersection. Please see the Public Notice (PDF).

Phase IV June 23
The curb lanes from McRoberts to Prescott as well sidewalks have been rebuilt and pave.

Work is moving west on the south side for sidewalks and the curb lane up to Sliverthorn at this time. Those wide sidewalks are history now.

New water valves are being install at Old Weston Rd and near completion.

The rest of the sidewalk up to Old Weston Rd will not be done until late July.

It has been said by TTC that ROW work will start in July, but cannot see that at this time. It is my understanding sidewalk and curb lane on the north side will be done first putting ROW work into Sept at this time. Timeline west of Old Weston Rd is unknown as tenders have yet to close.

The ROW on the west side of Caledoina has been dug up with some condute piping in place. Still have to tear up the west side before doing the intersection. This can be done when the intersection is closed again for the weekend and putting 47 back on detour again.

Here are photo's and video's of work on St Clair Phase II June 23

Sidewalk work is up to Arlington with work being done on the road up to this point.

Oakwood intersection is a mess with westbound traffic swinging from the westbound lanes to the eastbound at Alberta and then back to the westbound just west of the intersection.

The tracks for the straight section in the intersection is torn up with concrete based been pour. Tracks and part of the switches should be start going in on Wed or Thursday. The remaining section of the north side of the intersection will then torn up to get rest of the track work and the last switch in. That will be next week.

It will be mid July now before the ROW will connect to Phase III and be completed early Aug.

Unless sidewalk and road on the south side starts after the work reach Oakwood, there will be no way TTC will have service on this section this year if it only to Oakwood.

Parts of the 2 shelters are in place with pavers removed for Christie for some reason as they were there last week.

Traffic was a mess going westbound starting at Christie where it move to the ROW section and then back at Hendrick as well the mess at Oakwood. There is no real spot to make u-turns.

Saw cars driving up streets that have signs saying no not enter in large letters. At the same time, cars making a u-turn to drive eastbound in the westbound curb lane to get to streets access is closed for construction.

Thanks Drum for all the detailed posts. I'm very happy to see the progress without personally experiencing the hell that is st.clair currently.

The City keeps on screwing up this project one way or another.

The Oakwood intersection was not to be done until one of the west traffic light intersection was finish so people could make u-turns. Watching eastbound driver trying to make a u-turn at Oakwood was causing all kinds of traffic issues.

TTC has had a hand in this change as it needs crews to do work on Church St and Queen St as well a few other areas. Parklawn Loop was to start by now. Then in the fall, the Bathurst St bridge is supposed to get rebuilt.

Not all the hydro wires have been removed in Phase IV.

Not sure why only the curb lane is been done in Phase IV and not the other lane, other it will have an impact on the ROW work. By doing this, it will may travel smother than what takes place in Phase II now.

There is a real mess coming this fall when work starts on the Georgetown underpass where only one side will be in operation during construction It will have an impact on the Old Weston Rd intersection.

I really hope the City have all there ducks line up when work starts on Sheppard this year. The first project will be the rail grade seperation. If the ducks are not line up, TC is going to be in for a rough ride and seeing legal action making St Clair a small ripple effect.

The contractor has his hand full trying to keep up with these changes and putting him behind schedule.

I counted close to 20 business that have close doors and it cannot be blame on this project. Most of them have been on life support for years.

June 26 Update

Construction has started on the south side sidewalks from Vaughan Rd to just west of Wychwood intersection. One lady was trying to get out of her place where they just pour the concrete with the construction crew trying to figure out how to put boards accross the sidewalk when there was nothing to sit on at the doorway.

The road has been cut to allow the building of the eastbound platform at Wychwood.

The westbound Shelter at Wychood should be completed on June 27 as there was not much left to be done when I was there.

Game plan has been change once again to what I figure was going to happen.

All the platforms are to be built ASP reguardless if sidewalk or roadway is not done at these location. This will allow TTC to run service to Lansdowne.

Once service starts on the ROW, the contractor will have a tought time building the remaining sidewalk and road work. It will force traffic to one side of the street while the road is been work on.

As of Firday, the road between Arlington and Atlas still had to be dug up. Concrete has been pour from just east of Arlington to Christie. All sidewalk has been finish other than a spot or two.

Glenholme intersection should be open by now as it was missing tempoary pavement between the ROW and the road.

TTC crews still have to finish off splicing the rails at Oakwood so concrete can be pour for the base. Now that the tracks and switches are in for the straight section the rest of the road and tracks can be remove and be replace.

Drum..any idea where eastbound traffic is supposed to go if they are going to rebuild the south side of the road and run streetcars at the same time?

Also, once all this is done I remember reading somewhere that once the streetcars are running, they will have to shut down the line again to rebuild the ramps at St. Clair West station...if that's the case...the TTC and the City is one F****D up organization.

Yes at some point, Daaaa!!!! the ramp will have to be rebuilt forcing buses to run to Yonge St. Supposed to happen 2 years ago. Don't forget the mess in the loop cause construction to be put on hold for the ramp causing by using non updated drawings.

The eastbound traffic will be in the westbound single lane. Will make riders to think twice about crossing to/from the platforms.

Would not be surprise to see streetcars running over the winter months and then be removed in the spring to finish the unfinish work as well doing the ramps at the same time to save face for all parties.

The city is one screw up company. If it was a real company, it would be bankrupty by now and out of business.

As of right now, the shelter at Wychwood prominently says "OAKWOOD"
