Some hotel news-ish?

Also, land transactions with the city also related to the events centre netted the Stampede an on-paper gain of $66.9 million.

Some of those land swaps could ultimately see hotels built on three locations with a total of nearly 1,000 rooms, said Cowley.

“We’re working diligently on one site in particular which we could be announcing this summer,” he said.

“It’s what the majority of convention organizers demand, that their delegates remain on-site.”

Wonder which one of Weadickville, Cowboys Casino or Macleod and 12th could be getting an announcement or another announcement if it were Cowboys Casino?

Really curious what the hang up is. I've noticed new hotel announcements in Calgary seem to be the mid-tier ones: Elements, Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, etc. and maybe the issue is they want something on the level of a JW (EDM Ice District), Park Hyatt premium chain?

ah perfect - It's time for our annual hotel rumour thread bump. A proud local tradition as old as the Stampede itself.

They seem to be doing raised crosswalks in many of these designs. It's also in the 19th Street redesign. Does anyone know a completed example of a raised intersection?
I don't think any have been completed yet, the first will probably be the ones on 34th in Marda Loop or 12 Street in Inglewood which also has a full tabled intersection with 8th Ave

As I posted a while back, the Stampede CEO mentioned offhand in the latest CMLC Placemakers that the footprint of a hotel by the 17th Ave entrance to the park was being finalized. This can only mean the Weadickville site.

Awe! I think Weadickville is so cute! I would hate for it to be lost to a developer!

I’m loving all this new development in and around Stampede Park, but my God, will they save or preserve anything? Corral and original BMO demolished, Saddledome soon to be demolished, they announced the agriculture building will probably be demolished in the next few years, there have been lingering rumours about the Big 4 coming down, and now maybe Weadickville? What’s left other than the grandstand?

They preserved this old one as part of redevelopment in the NE corner...pretty sure it was a bakery dating back to 1929.

The Big Four should come down. It's horrible looking. Obviously it serves an important function for the Stampede but it could be replaced by something immeasurably better and with some sort of aesthetically interesting design, unlike current. Losing Weadickville would suck though. I would hope they'd just relocate it though? Seems like a no brainer, all those structures can be moved easily.

Moving Weadickville to the grassy area on the north side of the Elbow, combined with a joint hotel/rebuild of Big 4 would be my dream come true for the Stampede in the 2020s. Then the 2030s dream is converting GMC into a full CFL/Stampede stadium plus finishing up the mainstreets through the park.

Oooh! And a permanent roller coaster and London Eye style ferris wheel 🤩 A guy can dream.

Not an intersection, but mid block on 3rd avenue in Chinatown between Centre street and 1st street SE has a raised crosswalk.

Not sure if it is quite what you are looking for, but 8th AVe and 5th Street SE in East Village is raised up so there is very little deflection down from the sidewalk to the cross-walk:
Thanks, it's like barely visible. I talked to one of the project teams at the open house for a different street redesign and these raised intersections seems to be mid-height between the road and sidewalk and it just seemed like a very small difference that I was curious if it would actually make any difference to driving speed.

Thanks! Yea I've seen a couple raised sidewalks, but for some odd shaped intersection, where the roads don't perfectly align (i.e. 19th street and 2nd ave NW), they are raising the whole intersection, but lower than a raised sidewalk.

I think I'm one of the few who actually kinda like the Big Four building. I think with a bit of modernizing, painting the outside, complimentary outdoor lighting features, adding retail units into the main floor area, the building would be quite iconic. The 1950s flair adds some charm to the stampede.

From the executive committee meeting later today. Not opposed to generating additional revenue but please not have it be another developer.
