With no inside knowledge, what likely will happen is: Report goes to province. Province chooses option, writes in a letter to the City that any spending above the projected for that option will not be eligible for provincial cost sharing. This creates a dilemma, as the provincial option...

    Calgary Municipal Politics

The budget process has been seen as chaotic. The expectations of council does not assist with that though.

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

When I was working with a group thinking of building its own cloud service to service its and others needs, proximity was viewed as ideal for providing service near to or equal to having onsite compute given that the cycle consumers could choose either way. For AB vs other provinces, no sales...

Training models can be different. It depends.

They are answering questions that aren't illuminating while they wait for a consultant's report.

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

In our electricity market, a user that doesn't need 24/7 uptime (edit:*un*like a cloud business for example) can make a lot of money timing their demand. They can also build storage behind the plant gate to increase how many hours they want to play in the market.

I wouldn't put too much stock in this. Their main communications goal is to signal to business interests that tunnels are a non-starter, so be prepared to accept a non-tunnel alternative. Otherwise, the consultants are left to cook.

    Statscan numbers

Really difficult to disentangle predictions into the various categories of arrivals as our public discourse treats different numbers as the same all the time. Right now there are ~2.8-2.9 million non-permanent residents in Canada. By 2027, the goal is to have that number be ~2 million. so a net...

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

If it is causing congestion, then yeah. Frustration at things not being free flow is not always congestion. Every extra phase is extra waiting time for everyone.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I think it could in the AM. PM is more challenging, asking two lanes to handle 3600 ish vehicles (the interchange study from 2014+the reversal lane), along with dealing with weaving traffic. flexiposts and enforcing no lane changes, your stuck, from a couple 100 metres past 11th could make it...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

CalTRACS says 1200 vehicles peak peak westbound in the PM, 800 eastbound in the AM peak hour in May, 2024. That is a marginal drop from pre-pandemic. Peak hour on 9th east bound (west of 11th) is 4900 vehicles (May, Wednesday). Left turns 500, straight 2400, right turns 350 (August, Thursday)...

I used to use this quite regularly. Traffic is light out of phase on that stretch of roadway, so it works just fine.

IIRC originally the underground stations were going to be ~120m, to approach similar capacity as the existing 125m planned max for the red line. Over time, part of the value engineering was cutting the stations down to two car trains.

To be fair I think that was a goal in 2013/14 before the oil crash.

Can’t be underground on that route-the Bow parkade goes under the full width of 6th.

It will likely have to be entirely rebuilt. Utilities under a brt aren’t nearly as much of a concern as under an LRT.

There is room on 10th. Barely room on others but you need air easements. To make the curves you need to start the curve southwards before completing the curve northwards. Lets the turn start earlier.

    Calgary Regional Rail Transit

Land works is what railways are good at. As long as there aren’t too many aesthetic preferences we can still build for cheap. It is amazing what can be done when the scope is locked in place and the nearly the only thing that matters. Almost the total opposite of our typical municipal way of...

    Calgary Regional Rail Transit

Sometimes it really depends on how busy the crowsnest pass is as they work together to some degree due to shared capacity west of golden. Each can handle up to 35, 37 maybe trains a day if the other has 0. There is also that they hold a lot of recovery capacity in the winter, yet fall harvest...

    Calgary Regional Rail Transit

The regulation doesn’t work like that. It is more of a ‘you get what you pay for’. The Banff link will more than quadruple capacity between Calgary and Banff. Part of the arrangement has been envisioned for a long time as the link rents capacity on the mainline for contingency use and rents the...
